Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Flintshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Fragment of silver decorative mount, broken top and bottom. The outline has the superficial resemblance to spoon handle terminals, but the figurative decoration is the wrong way round, and the cast is hollow on the reverse and clearly intended to sit against a flat surface. The mount has a tapering form, widest the base of the main motif. This has the form of a crowned reliquary bust of a female saint with long hair, facing forward. The background is filled with asymmetrical vegetal scrolls, against a rusticated surface. Below the bust is a smaller triangular panel filled with what ap…

Flint entirely covered by dense white patina scraper. Large flake with broad flakes removed by oblique hard hammer strike from the dorsal side andwith ripples on the ventral. Short abrupt retouch follows the curving edge and nay also define a notch on one side. There are also long flakes removed from beside the working edge by hard hammer strike from the ventral aspect, which occurred in antiquity, though whether deliberately is uncertain. The thick patina indicates this object has endured long exposure, and in this respect is unusual among the large number of flints reported from the…

Medieval copper alloy strap fitting, a belt mount with a separate centrally placed rivet and a round concavity on the reverse. The form is suggestive of a stylised facing bust with neck. Two moulded low projections bear some resemblance to brow ridges. However, the cross-hatched engraved decoration has no clear relation to facial features. Several examples on this database are said to represent scallop shells (see LIN-1C4243), while of two examples from Buckinghamshire (Milton Keynes), one was described as pear-shaped and the other as an animal head (Ivens et al. 1995, fig. 153, nos. …
