Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Devon
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Medieval to Post Medieval lead weight. The object is approximately conical in shape, tapering slightly towards the top. Both ends are circular and a circular perforation runs throughout the middle of the object. The item is probably a weight; possibly for fishing. Possibly rope or string would have been passed through the perforation and knotted at one end, with a loop at the other end to provide means of attachment. Lead weights have continued in use since the Roman period, therefore this type of artefact can be difficult to date with certainity without an archaeological context. H…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lilly Chitty Collection An Early Bronze Age barbed and tanged arrowhead (2,500 to 1,500 BC), dark grey in colour. This piece is sub-triangular in plan and sub-elliptical in section. The seventh of 10 pieces, the number "7" is written in brio on a small label stuck to the ventral face of this piece. Most likely to be attributed to the Conygar Hill typology of barbed and tanged arrowheads, this small piece has been bificially worked and is missing one of its barbs. The remaining barb is squared yet slightly rounded, and it can be assumed that the missing opposing barb would have s…

Lilly Chitty Collection A later Neolithic bifacially worked blade (3,200 to 2,500 BC), dark grey in colour with a light grey single-mass inclusion, making up early half of this piece. This piece is sub-triangular in plan and sub-rectilinear in section. The sixth of 10 pieces, with the number "6" written in biro on the ventral face. Probably originating as a large flake, this piece displays ripple flaking on the side edges on both faces, forming blade edge, however the one could be utilised as a scraper given its small but significantly steep edge. A bulb of percussion is present…

Lilly Chitty Collection A Mesolithic microlith (7,000 to 4,000 BC), off-white in colour. This piece is sub-elliptical in plan and sub-rectilinear in section. The fourth of 10 pieces, this piece has the number "4" written in biro on the ventral face. The colour owes its origins to patination in chalk downland rather than having been burnt. There is minimal evidence of retouch on the blade edges of this microlith, however these edges remain sharp to this day - a lack of retouch does not account for a lack of utility. Whilst possessing 2 parallel edges running its length, this micr…

Lilly Chitty Collection A Neolithic scraper (4,000 to 2,500 BC), dark-red in colour fading to grey at the distal edge. This piece is sub-elliptical in plan and sub-elliptical in section - rather dome-like. The first of 10 pieces from one bag, with the number "1" written in biro on the ventral face. The most-proximal facet of the dorsal face retains cortex, whilst all other facets are heavily scarred. A thick specimen, the scraping edge has been formed by the removal of flakes from the ventral face up over the dorsal face, and this edge has been worked further with some fine hard …

Lilly Chitty Collection A Mesolithic microlith/bladelet (7,000 to 4,000 BC), grey in colour with a slightly blue hue. This piece is sub-triangular in plan and sub-triangular in section. This piece belongs to Type F of the Clark classification (Clark, 1934), however Clark himself has dated this piece to the Bronze Age; in the judgment of the identifier, this piece is more likely to be of the former. It has evidence of retouch on all edges but the most distal. At this end on the ventral face is an erailleur scar. The dorsal face comprises 4 main facets. The proximal end tapers to …

Lilly Chitty Collection A Neolithic primary flake scraper (4,000 to 2,500 BC), grey-blue in colour. This piece is sub-circular in plan and sub-triangular in section. The blue patination can be attributed to this piece lying in river bank clay until its discovery, which is documented in an accompanying note written by Chitty. Most of the dorsal face remains covered by cortex, with 4 main facets present at the proximal end and one side. The side edge would most likely have been utilised as a scraping edge, however unlike many scrapers there is not much evidence of retouch and this…

This piece is sub-rectilinear in plan, tapering to a point at the distal end, and sub-triangular in section. It is the result of an overshoot termination taken from a core, with 4 main facets on the dorsal face, 2 of which run the entire length of this piece, the remaining 2 being located one above the other. Lilly Chitty Collection A piece of Neolithic secondary debitage (4,000 to 2,500 BC), grey in colour with a little cortex still present on the dorsal face. This piece is sub-rectilinear in plan and sub-rectilinear in section. The dorsal face displays some very prominent rings of percussion on the main facet. There are possible signs of retouch on one of the side edges, however these are likely to have been produced via plough damage. A Post Medieval lead alloy powder measure dating from c. AD 1600 to 1700. The powder measure is now squashed and mis-shapen, however it would have originally had a cup-like appearance, having a closed circular base with straight sides and being open at the top. Towards the base are two semi-circular attachment loops at opposite sides to each other. The powder measure would have been attached to a belt (bandolier) via a cord through these loops.
