Late Saxon stirrup-strap mount, Williams Class A, Type 1, with a knobbed profile, perforated lobe containing corroded iron rivet at the apex and with two more perforations with corroded iron rivets at base, flange on reverse and corroded fragment of iron plate. Face decorated with crudely engraved vertical lines of irregular zig-zag, perhaps in an attempt to imitate knotwork or interlace. Height 47mm. Width 31mm. 3mm thick. Weighs 21.50g. Cf. Medieval copper alloy sharp hooked dress fastener with hollow semi-circular cross-section tapering to the thinner, closed end from which springs an integral hook tip missing). An offset runs the length of the long sides to lie flat against a (missing) flat sheet back-plate. The convex face is decorated with pairs of transverse grooves at both ends, and between them with deeply filed lines in cross-hatched lozengiform pattern. Medieval copper alloy strap fitting, a belt mount with a separate centrally placed rivet and a round concavity on the reverse. The form is suggestive of a stylised facing bust with neck. Two moulded low projections bear some resemblance to brow ridges. However, the cross-hatched engraved decoration has no clear relation to facial features. Medieval copper alloy oval buckle frame with an offset, narrowed bar and a straight outside edge with a pair of knops flanking a constriction and a sheet roller. At its centre the bar has been worn and distorted by the missing pin. The roller is in a paler green surfaced alloy with, by normal standards, quite elaborate decoration: between a raised rib on both sides a row of engraved chevrons and a median groove. In the same broad category as Egan and Pritchard 1991, nos. 288, 298, 301 and 317. Length and width 23.2 and 25.3mm. 14th century.
