Pale buff sedimentary stone - possibly a fine grained limestone - unidentified object. Trapezoid object with five flat faces and one longer side which is stepped in three stages, the latter probably a natural formation. The material appears unsuitable to serve as a whetstone, a function which the rectilinear form might otherwise admit, and none of the surfaces are so smoothed as to suggest this was used as a rubbing or polishing stone. A broad date range is offered to include the most likely periods for the [often improvised] use of such stone objects. This could originally have been …

Iron tack. Small wrought iron tack with a flat oval head. White material to a thickness of c.5mm trapped beneath the head may be corrosion product from lead sheet. If this is correct, this may have helped fasten light flashing. However, the accompanying finds did not suggest the presence of lead from structures in the vicinity, and this is a lightweight fastening at best. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1800. Length: 10.8mm, Head diameter (long axis): 10.9mm, Weight: 1.74gms.

A group of 35 lead alloy apparent tokens of uncertain but probably modern date found scattered across a field. Each token has an obverse which shows a bearded bust facing left, possibly with lettering in front arranged in an arc. The reverse shows a standing stick-like figure holding a staff in one hand while in the other is an annular object on a rod, facing downwards. From a sample of four examples the tokens have a mean diameter of 19.42mm and a mean weight of 7.53g. Each shows evidence for a casting seam. The tokens bear little resemblance to post medieval lead tokens and ar…

Lead possible tally. Flat semi-circular fragment of thin (0.5mm) lead sheet or foil. A figure of three bars, possibly a letter I with emphasised upper and lower seriffs, appears close to what is presumed to be a neatly broken edge. Patinated overall. The object is thinner than tokens of medieval and post-medieval date, and its function may have been correspondingly ephemeral; dating is suggested by the assumed letter style. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1650. Diameter: 18.5mm, Thickness: 0.5mm, Weight: 0.39gms.

Iron possible buckle frame fragment. Part of a circular or oval loop, apparently of oval or D section. The extent of corrosion is limited given the material, which might hint at its protection by a white metal plating, though X-radiography would be required to investigate this, which would be inappropriate to a fragmentary field find. Suggested date: possibly Medieval, 1200-1500. Length (as found): 29.2mm, Width: 6mm, Thickness: 3.3mm, Weight: 2.41gms.
