Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint with cortex strip, possibly collected from the East Coast, core. Core with a flat striking platform and long parallel flakes removed by unidirectional working. The ends [laterally described] both bear small areas of pressure flaked retouch or battering. The lack of patina, save for a patch on the striking platform, tends to suggest this object was incorporated in a sealed context shortly after its discard; however, the glossy surface is also reminiscent of a 'desert gloss' acquired in periglacial or later dust storms. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Heig…

Grey flint with cortex and patches of cloudy patina debitage. Three struck flakes, all produced by hard hammer strike. The appearance of retouch arises from recent impact damage to the arises rather than working. Suggested date: Bronze Age, 2350-800 BC. Combined Weight: 24.75gms.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint with patches of cloudy patina on one side core fragment. One side of a core with bipolar flake removal scars bearing light patina, and with flat surfaces apt to serve as the striking platform for both. The flint was subsequently broken with a stepped hinge fracture on its 'back' (i.e. relative to the struck surface). Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Height: 28.3mm, Width: 41.0mm, Thickness: 13.3mm, Weight: 19.69gms.

Dark grey flint with cortex spots and dense patina overall core. Lump with remnant striking platform and long parallel flakes removed by mainly unidirectional working, though some damage inflicted in antiquity is also apparent. The tint of flint is only revealed by recent chips, suggesting a prolonged period of weathering. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Height: 33.2mm, Width: 35.6mm, Thickness: 18.5mm, Weight: 21.99gms.

Grey flint scraper. Flake with broad flakes struck from its [probable] dorsal side by multi-directional hard hammer strike, and with conchoidal hollows on its [probable] ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect along one straight edge has incurred subsequent battering. The adjacent edge may have received very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect. The lack of patina may suggest either a relatively recent date or incorporation until recently in a sealed deposit. Suggested date: Bronze Age, 2350-800 BC. Length: 38.9mm, Width: 36.8mm, Thi…

Grey flint with cortex and extensive cloudy patina core. Lump with mainly unidirectional flake removal and a flat striking platform, with scars showing removal of broad parallel flakes. Chipping which reveals the tint of the flint is probably post-depositional damage of an already weathered object. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Height: 21mm, Width: 25mm, Thickness: 24.3mm, Weight: 14.96gms.

Broad period: MESOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark brown flint with cortex backed blade, as kindly identified by the finder. Long flake with long parallel flakes removed from its dorsal side and flat on the ventral. Very short fine abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal side produced a finely serrated straight blade with a possibly broken extension above it, with relict cortex along the opposite edge permitting pressure to be brought to bear when using the blade. The ventral surface bears several shallow conchoidal chips, possibly from the formation or use of the lost part. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral asp…

Buff grey flint with cloudy white patina overall knife fragment. Flake with three flakes struck from its dorsal side and with faint ripples on the ventral. Very short abrupt retouch along one long edge was executed from the ventral aspect, removing patina. This suggests a weathered flake was reused. Patina is also lost from one end, probably from the breakage of the original flake at the time of its reworking or thereafter. A broad Neolithic date could accommodate all episodes of working. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 25.7mm, Width: 16.5mm, Thickness: 3.1mm, We…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint with cortex spots and extensive cloudy patina patches scraper. Flake from hard hammer strike with a prominent bulb on the ventral side. The patina is interrupted by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect which has trimmed most cortex. The disruption of patina suggests this reworking, characteristic of an Early Bronze Age date, was executed on an already weathered flake. Suggested date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, 2700-1600 BC. Length: 23.3mm, Width: 28.6mm, Thickness: 6mm, Weight: 3.86gms.

Grey flint with cloudy patches of patina knife fragment. Flake with two broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with ripples on the ventral. The longest edge bears very short abrupt retouch probably executed from the dorsal side. The opposite edge is flat and patina indicates this is original; by the same token, the fresher appearance at the ends shows that both ends of the knife are lost to more recent damage. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 25.9mm, Width: 17.0mm, Thickness: 4.0mm, Weight: 1.78gms.

Blue grey flint with cortex and cloudy patches of patina scraper. Thumbnail scraper with some cortex trimmed by hard hammer strike on the dorsal side and with a flat ventral surface. Short abrupt scalar retouch around two thirds of the curving edge is executed from the dorsal aspect; this lacks the extent of patina which occurs on the ventral surface, suggesting suitable debris from an earlier period was used to make this object. The earlier object may have been a horned or hollow scraper. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, reused in the Early Bronze Age, 2700-1600 BC. Length: 32.4m…

Semi-translucent grey flint of good quality knife. Flake with a flat dorsal side and a bulb on the ventral, with one long edge formed by a positive hinge fracture. Short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect converts the hinge fracture to a cutting edge, whose use appears to have promoted the formation of conchoidal scars alongside it on the dorsal side. Semi-translucent grey flint debitage with cortex possibly a transverse arrowhead. Flake with two broad parallel flakes removed from the dorsal side and a prominent bulb, either chipped or trimmed, on the ventral. The putative blade (as illustrated) may be defined by a thin positive hinge fracture. The curvature of the object in profile might introduce irregularity in flight, and hence may cast doubt on the proposed identification. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC.
