Record ID: SUR-70EB72
Object type: HOARD
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Reading
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Two silver coins, late issues of the Amirs of Sind, probably of the ruler Ahmad or imitations thereof. They were produced in the early 11th Century. Coin 1: 0.28g, 8mm Coin 2: 0.30g, 7mm The coins originated from the area of modern day Pakistan. It is extremely unlikely that they would have circulated so far at the time they were in use, and their transportation to Britain probably did not take place before the second Anglo-Maratha War (1802-3) when the East India Company first established itself in regions where these coins are found.

An incomplete Neolithic polished greenstone axehead dating to the period c. 4000 - 2500 BC. The axehead is trapezoidal in shape and widens from the butt end to the blade. It tapers in thickness from the butt end to the blade. The axehead has an oval cross-section at the butt end and a lenticular cross-section at the blade end. The butt end of the axehead was broken off in antiquity and the remaining fragment reused. The butt end appears to have been used as a hammer stone. There is evidence of pecking on this surface and it is slightly rounded. The cutting edge of the blade has been de…

A 19th-20th century modern replica of a silver penny of Aelfred Rex, which has been turned into a pendant by means of a nicely produced loop with rivet. The obverse depicts a helmeted bust facing left similar to London Monogram types, but is left facing, rather than right, with the addition of a sword behind his head. The reverse is unlike any known examples from the Early Medieval period, but likely to be an imitation of a fourth century Roman nummus reverse type, depicting Victory on the prow of a ship; a reverse type linked closely to the House of Constantine dynasty. Due to t…

A complete medieval cast copper-alloy and enamelled heraldic harness stud (c. 1307-1324). The front face of the pendant carries an enamelled heraldic device comprising four transverse bands in blue enamel, with five red birds or martlets fairly evenly spaced around the plate, the silvering in between now missing due to post-depositional corrosion. However, a small fleck of decayed silver survives. At the rear, an integral tapering spike is sub-square in cross-section and its tip is bent at an angle of 90°. The metal is drab green with tiny areas of corrosion. Diameter: 22.3…

Object type: TESSERA
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Grey Limestone possible tessera. Irregular stone cube whose faces were possibly defined by drafts of an axe or chisel, and subsequently chipped. The smoothest side may have formed part of a mosaic floor. The use of larger tesserae would be more likely in the later Roman period, as part of an undecorated floor, a simple geometric design, or in the border to a figurative design. Suggested date: possibly Late Roman, 200-375. Length: 28.4mm, Width: 20.9mm, Thickness: 22.6mm, Weight: 27.28gms.

Pale grey flint with patches of cloudy patina possible transverse arrowhead, as kindly identified by the finder. Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pale buff flint with cortex and cloudy white patina patches knife. Flake with a single flake removed from its dorsal side and a prominent bulb on the ventral, both from hard hammer strike. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect interrupts the patina and forms a cutting edge along one curving side. Cortex is also removed along from the opposite edge; this and other chips which interrupt cortex or patina could have arisen fortuitously. Both episodes of deliberate working could be accommodated within the Neolithic period. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. …

Object type: PLANO CONVEX KNIFE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint thickly patinated with cortex possible plano-convex knife. Elongated flake of plano-convex section. Minimal short abrupt pressure flaked retouch along one edge has trimmed cortex to produce a single durable cutting edge. It seems likely that the patination of the ventral surface was acquired before this reworking. Suggested date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, 2700-1600 BC. Dark grey flint with cortex and cloudy patina plano-convex knife. Flake with a bulb on its ventral side and with parallel strips of invasive scalar retouch on both its long sides removing cortex and forming durable cutting edges. These have acquired an identical patina to the ventral side, which extends to an obliquely snapped end. Suggested date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, 2700-1600 BC. Oblique arrowhead, grey flint with cortex spot and cloudy patches of patina triangular arrowhead. Pale semi-translucent flint transverse arrowhead, as kindly identified by the finder. Small flake with long parallel flakes removed from the dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral, the working of the two sides being at right angles. Short abrupt retouch, probably a single impact, has trimmed what is here taken as the cutting edge of the arrowhead. The projectile must have received nearly all its effect from the combined power of bow and weight of the arrow shaft behind this lightweight head. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC. Opaque pale grey flint with cortex scraper. A flake of wavy profile with parallel flakes removed from the dorsal side in the course of cortex trimming, and with short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect along its curved edge. The smooth ventral surface, which is reminiscent of a negative hinge fracture, facilitates a grip between finger and thumb. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pale grey flint with patches of cloudy patina scraper. Flake with broad flakes removed from its ventral side and with a bulb on the ventral. Short abrupt pressure flaked retouch removes the thin patina accumulated over a flake struck at some time before this reworking. The lack of patina on retouch may suggest the reworked object was then incorporated into a sealed context. Both episodes could be accommodated by a Neolithic date.
