A fragment of cast copper-alloy metal working debris of uncertain date. It is triangular in form and section, terminating on at least two sides in old breaks. All surfaces are extremely worn, with only traces of a dark green/brown patina surviving. It measures 25.33mm in length, 14.87mm in width, 9.03mm in thickness, and 8.63g in weight. The precise function of this fragment remains uncertain. Its form is similar to the corners/edges of Bronze Age objects, such as socketed axes, and it is not implausible that this is a fragment from the corner of a cutting edge/blade. However, its poo…

An incomplete post medieval iron knife, dating circa AD1520. The knife is formed of an iron scale tang blade with a wooden handle decorated with copper alloy studs and trefoil mounts and a copper alloy knife end cap. The blade is broken and the tip is missing. The iron of the blade is corroded but there is a faint impression of a cross where the maker's mark is usually situated. The scales, forming the handle, are made of wood. There are three copper alloy rivets securing the handle and two decorative trefoil mounts, perhaps representing a clover. The two trefoil mounts are alternate…

Dark brown flint of good quality with cortex spot knife. Leaf-shaped flake with two broad flakes removed from the dorsal side and with a bulb at one end and a positive hinge fracture at the other end of the ventral side. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect enhances a short cutting edge on one side; other chips probably represent fortuitous damage. The selection of a distinctively dark brown flint is characteristic of a few, usually early, stone tools reported from the region. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Grey flint with extensive cloudy patina and a little cortex knife. Flake with two flakes removed its dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral. Very short abrupt retouch along one side executed from the dorsal aspect forms a short cutting edge, with the thicker blunt edge with relict cortex on the opposite side opposite affording grip between finger and thumb. The finder kindly cites NLM-257068 as a parallel. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 24.6mm, Width: 20.3mm, Thickness: 5.4mm, Weight: 3.10gms.

Grey flint of good quality knife. Flake with broad flakes removed from its dorsal side and with a striking platform and prominent bulb on the ventral. Very short retouch along one side is executed from the dorsal aspect. The primary working is characteristic of hard hammer strike and the retouch of pressure flaking, while the complete lack of patina and sharp edges suggests incorporation in a sealed context shortly after deposition. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 22.8mm, Width: 23.7mm, Thickness: 6.8mm, Weight: 2.66gms.

Copper alloy Bronze Age blade fragment from a knife. This has a low oval cross-section with tapered blades on either side. At one end the edges are tapered inwards the tip, which is now truncated. The rear of the blade is also truncated make it impossible to determine if it had a socket or tang. When viewed in side profile blade has a slight curve, which straightens out towards the tip, this curve does not look to be post-depositional damage and is therefore part of the design on the knife. The date range for this type of knife is c1100 to c800BC.

Pale buff flint with cortex and cloudy white patina patches knife. Flake with a single flake removed from its dorsal side and a prominent bulb on the ventral, both from hard hammer strike. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect interrupts the patina and forms a cutting edge along one curving side. Cortex is also removed along from the opposite edge; this and other chips which interrupt cortex or patina could have arisen fortuitously. Both episodes of deliberate working could be accommodated within the Neolithic period. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. …
