Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy Roman to medieval (AD c.43-c.1500) awl. Overall, the awl measures 48.3mm long, 5.5mm wide and 5.2mm thick. It weighs 4.69g. The awl is rectangular in cross-section for half its length and circular in cross-section for the other half. Each half narrows to a point. The rectangular cross-sectioned part would have formed the tang and would have been inserted into a handle and the other point would have been the functional end.

Pale grey flint with patches of cloudy patina Scraper. Flake with broad flakes removed from its ventral side and with a bulb on the ventral. Short abrupt pressure flaked retouch removes the thin patina accumulated over a flake struck at some time before this reworking. The lack of patina on retouch may suggest the reworked object was then incorporated into a sealed context. Both episodes could be accommodated by a Neolithic date. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 35.3mm, Width: 17mm, Thickness: 10.6mm, Weight: 5.47gms.

A tinned copper alloy medieval buckle with integral plate dating to the period c. AD 1250 - 1450. The buckle frame is D-shaped and thickens on the outermost edge into a triagular projection which functions as the pin rest. This features a horizontal groove. The frame has a moulded pin rest formed of a double transverse central ridge, flanked by grooves, and lobed knop at either end of the bar. Dark grey flint of good quality, with extensive white patina, Scraper. Oval flake with broad and narrow flakes removed from its dorsal side and rippled on the ventral. Short abrupt retouch of a protruding lobe has removed milky white patina, revealing the darker tint of flint beneath. This must have followed a long period during which the flake was exposed to weathering, and may imply that the struck flake was then recognised as of further value. However, both episodes could be accommodated by a Neolithic date. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 36.5mm, Width: 34.5mm,…

Dark brown flint of good quality Scraper. Flake with broad flakes removed from its dorsal side and with a prominent bulb on the ventral. Invasive retouch, some directed from the edges inwards and executed from the dorsal aspect, appears to have been followed by grinding or battering of parts of the edge, which is probably not fortuitous damage given the good condition of most of the surface. Copper alloy Bronze Age blade fragment from a knife. This has a low oval cross-section with tapered blades on either side. At one end the edges are tapered inwards the tip, which is now truncated. The rear of the blade is also truncated make it impossible to determine if it had a socket or tang. When viewed in side profile blade has a slight curve, which straightens out towards the tip, this curve does not look to be post-depositional damage and is therefore part of the design on the knife. The date range for this type of knife is c1100 to c800BC.
