A silver-gilt Post Medieval hooked tag, dating from the 16th century. The back plate is trefoil with a pinked edge. There is a hollow domed boss soldered to the front of each lobe. These are decorated with three filigree circles on each, a pellet in the centre and a filigree border at the base of each boss. Some of the decoration is missing. The bracelet is made of silver wires twisted together to form an open hoop with solid terminals; diameter 65mm; weight, 44.32 grams. Non-destructive surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated a silver content of over 99% with traces of gold, lead and copper. The high purity suggests the bracelet is not of European origin, while the regularity of manufacture suggests it is probably made of machine-drawn wire in recent times. It does not therefore qualify as Treasure under the stipulated criteria of the Treasure Act. B.M. Ager Curator Department of Bri…
