A post-Medieval double-loop buckle which is largely made of copper alloy. The frame is of flat section and is sub-rectangular in plan, having rounded corners and inward-bowing top and bottom sides. Contained within opposing holes at the centre of the frame is the iron axis bar. This bar serves to attach a tongue-shaped copper-alloy plate and also the pin. There is ascallop-shaped pin rest at the centre of both the right- and left-hand ends of the frame.

A cast copper-alloy double-looped oval buckle frame of post-medieval date (c. 1550-1650). The frame has a moulded pin rest formed of a double transverse central ridge, flanked by grooves, and lobed knop at either end of the bar. The bar is slightly narrowed, and the pin is missing; iron staining to the bar indicates the use of iron for the pin. The frame has a D-shaped cross-section with the reverse being flat. The object has a pitted olive green patina. Length: 40.69mm; Width: 26.82mm; Thickness: 3.5mm; Weight: 7.44g See Whitehead (2003, 61; no. 360) for a similar buckle dated…

A medieval cast copper-alloy buckle frame. The frame is oval, with an offset bar, the bar being distorted as a result of old damage. There is a grooved pin rest in the centre of the pointed outside edge, flanked to each side by a double moulding parallel to the groove; the mouldings project slightly beyond the outside edge, to the front of the buckle. It is bevelled both externally and internally on the front. A thick sheet pin survives looped around the bar. It has corroded to a different colour to the frame suggesting that it was made of a different alloy. It has been been slightly …

An incomplete and distorted copper-alloy frame from a medieval single-loop buckle. The frame comprises a strip of flat section which narrows towards the inner side, where it terminates in two opposing axis bar cylinders. The axis bar is largely missing, but iron corrosion on both cylinders attests to its former composition. Longitudinal lines of rocker-arm grooves decorate the outer face of the frame.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete copper-alloy double-loop buckle of post-Medieval date. The intact side of the frame is 'D' shaped, with steep inner edges and flat upper surfaces that slope downwards and outwards. The axis bar has an oval cross section. Little remains of the other side of the frame, but the surviving portion suggests this was originally a symmetrical buckle. Looped loosely around the axis bar, the pin has a D-shaped cross section and parallel sides throughout most of its length, tapering only at the tip, which overhangs the edge of the frame.
