Record ID: NLM-719B8D
Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark brown flint of good quality with cortex spot knife. Leaf-shaped flake with two broad flakes removed from the dorsal side and with a bulb at one end and a positive hinge fracture at the other end of the ventral side. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect enhances a short cutting edge on one side; other chips probably represent fortuitous damage. The selection of a distinctively dark brown flint is characteristic of a few, usually early, stone tools reported from the region. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 58.4mm, Width: 35.4mm, Thickness:…

Object type: GUNFLINT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark grey flint gunflint. The finder kindly cites WAW-DAC006 as a parallel. Knapped rectangular plano-convex flint with bevelled edges on its convex side, and with impact scars from use at both its ends. For earlier periods this would be used with a firelock musket or wheel lock pistol, for which ignition of the propellant charge was by sparks from a struck flint gripped in the jaws of a holder, rather than the slow match or impregnated cord which was used with most larger weapons such as muskets and hand guns until the later 17th century. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1850. …

Grey flint with cortex and overall cloudy patina debitage. Flake with three long parallel flakes removed from its dorsal side, concave on the ventral with a slightly curved profile. The thick patina indicates this flint was subject to prolonged exposure after deposition. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 33.3mm, Width: 26.9mm, Thickness: 12.4mm, Weight: 5.47gms.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark grey flint with slight cloudy patina patches and with cortex scraper. Tiny thumbnail scraper with short abrupt retouch trimming cortex from the dorsal side and with light rippling on the ventral. The good condition and survival of a sharp spur of projecting flint may suggest this object to have been incorporated and remained in a sealed deposit until relatively shortly before its discovery. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 17.3mm, Width: 18.9mm, Thickness: 4.1mm, Weight: 1.55gms.

Grey flint with extensive cloudy patina and a little cortex knife. Flake with two flakes removed its dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral. Very short abrupt retouch along one side executed from the dorsal aspect forms a short cutting edge, with the thicker blunt edge with relict cortex on the opposite side opposite affording grip between finger and thumb. The finder kindly cites NLM-257068 as a parallel. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 24.6mm, Width: 20.3mm, Thickness: 5.4mm, Weight: 3.10gms.

Grey flint of good quality knife. Flake with broad flakes removed from its dorsal side and with a striking platform and prominent bulb on the ventral. Very short retouch along one side is executed from the dorsal aspect. The primary working is characteristic of hard hammer strike and the retouch of pressure flaking, while the complete lack of patina and sharp edges suggests incorporation in a sealed context shortly after deposition. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 22.8mm, Width: 23.7mm, Thickness: 6.8mm, Weight: 2.66gms.

Mottled pale grey flint knife fragment. Small oval-ended flake with three long parallel flakes removed from the dorsal side, a bulb of percussion on the ventral side, and with very short abrupt and probably pressure flaked retouch along a short [7mm] concave part of one side; the object has broken from a longer flake, though this may have occurred before the retouch facilitating continued use or reuse. Dark brown flint of good quality scraper. Flake with broad flakes removed from its dorsal side and with a prominent bulb on the ventral. Invasive retouch, some directed from the edges inwards and executed from the dorsal aspect, appears to have been followed by grinding or battering of parts of the edge, which is probably not fortuitous damage given the good condition of most of the surface. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 36.6mm, Width: 27.7mm, Thickness: 9.5mm, Weight: 10.46gms.

Dark grey flint of good quality, with extensive white patina, scraper. Oval flake with broad and narrow flakes removed from its dorsal side and rippled on the ventral. Short abrupt retouch of a protruding lobe has removed milky white patina, revealing the darker tint of flint beneath. This must have followed a long period during which the flake was exposed to weathering, and may imply that the struck flake was then recognised as of further value. However, both episodes could be accommodated by a Neolithic date. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 36.5mm, Width: 34.5m…

Pale grey flint with patches of cloudy patina scraper. Flake with broad flakes removed from its ventral side and with a bulb on the ventral. Short abrupt pressure flaked retouch removes the thin patina accumulated over a flake struck at some time before this reworking. The lack of patina on retouch may suggest the reworked object was then incorporated into a sealed context. Both episodes could be accommodated by a Neolithic date. Opaque pale grey flint with cortex scraper. A flake of wavy profile with parallel flakes removed from the dorsal side in the course of cortex trimming, and with short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect along its curved edge. The smooth ventral surface, which is reminiscent of a negative hinge fracture, facilitates a grip between finger and thumb. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Pale semi-translucent flint transverse arrowhead, as kindly identified by the finder. Small flake with long parallel flakes removed from the dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral, the working of the two sides being at right angles. Short abrupt retouch, probably a single impact, has trimmed what is here taken as the cutting edge of the arrowhead. The projectile must have received nearly all its effect from the combined power of bow and weight of the arrow shaft behind this lightweight head. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC. Grey flint thickly patinated with cortex possible plano-convex knife. Elongated flake of plano-convex section. Minimal short abrupt pressure flaked retouch along one edge has trimmed cortex to produce a single durable cutting edge. It seems likely that the patination of the ventral surface was acquired before this reworking. Suggested date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, 2700-1600 BC. Pale buff flint with cortex and cloudy white patina patches knife. Flake with a single flake removed from its dorsal side and a prominent bulb on the ventral, both from hard hammer strike. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect interrupts the patina and forms a cutting edge along one curving side. Cortex is also removed along from the opposite edge; this and other chips which interrupt cortex or patina could have arisen fortuitously. Both episodes of deliberate working could be accommodated within the Neolithic period. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. …

Object type: TESSERA
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Grey Limestone possible tessera. Irregular stone cube whose faces were possibly defined by drafts of an axe or chisel, and subsequently chipped. The smoothest side may have formed part of a mosaic floor. The use of larger tesserae would be more likely in the later Roman period, as part of an undecorated floor, a simple geometric design, or in the border to a figurative design.
