Flint blade fragment, possibly a worn microlith of broad Mesolithic date, but more likely just a blade dating from 9000 - 4000 BC. The flint is cream coloured and is opaque. It is a tertiary flake and is sub-rhomboid shaped in plan and flat trapezoid in section with a single dorsal ridge. The form is very similar to a microlith but there is no observable retouch. It is 9.9mm long x 5mm wide x 1.2mm thick. Weight 0.06g.

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Kirklees

Flint borer, of uncertain date, Mesolithic to Neolithic (9000 - 2200 BC). The flint is a brown colour and is translucent. It is a tertiary flake and is roughly teardrop shaped in plan and flat elliptical in section. The flint has a sharp curved point at the distal end. This point has been produced by minimal short, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt, soft hammer retouch to the left edge of the distal end carried out from the dorsal face. There is also edge damage, or possible very fine retouch on the right side at the proximal end. The flint is 30.2mm long x 14.5mm wide x 4.2mm thick. Weight 1.2g.

An early Neolithic flint core rejuvination flake dating to the period c. 4000 - 3501 BC. The flake features five parallel negative flake removal scars on one surface from the production of blades and bladelets. The rejuvination flake has been struck off the core at a ninety degree angle to these scars. The bulb of percussion is diffuse and the flake terminates in a hinged fracture. The core rejuvination flake retains c. 40% cortex. There is some evidene of platfor preparation on the opposite surface to the removal. The flint is a mottled grey in colour, with some patination. Four pieces retain between c. 5% and 35% cortex on their surface and have been struck off secondary flakes. The other seven retain no traces of cortex and have been struck off tertiay flakes. Where bulbs of pecussion are visible, they are large with prominent ripple marks, indicating some hard hammer working. Two o…

Dark grey flint gunflint. The finder kindly cites WAW-DAC006 as a parallel. Knapped rectangular plano-convex flint with bevelled edges on its convex side, and with impact scars from use at both its ends. For earlier periods this would be used with a firelock musket or wheel lock pistol, for which ignition of the propellant charge was by sparks from a struck flint gripped in the jaws of a holder, rather than the slow match or impregnated cord which was used with most larger weapons such as muskets and hand guns until the later 17th century. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1850. …

Dark brown flint of good quality with cortex spot knife. Leaf-shaped flake with two broad flakes removed from the dorsal side and with a bulb at one end and a positive hinge fracture at the other end of the ventral side. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect enhances a short cutting edge on one side; other chips probably represent fortuitous damage. The selection of a distinctively dark brown flint is characteristic of a few, usually early, stone tools reported from the region. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Grey flint with extensive cloudy patina and a little cortex knife. Flake with two flakes removed its dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral. Grey flint of good quality knife. Flake with broad flakes removed from its dorsal side and with a striking platform and prominent bulb on the ventral. Very short retouch along one side is executed from the dorsal aspect. The primary working is characteristic of hard hammer strike and the retouch of pressure flaking, while the complete lack of patina and sharp edges suggests incorporation in a sealed context shortly after deposition. Pale buff flint with cortex and cloudy white patina patches knife. Flake with a single flake removed from its dorsal side and a prominent bulb on the ventral, both from hard hammer strike. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect interrupts the patina and forms a cutting edge along one curving side. Cortex is also removed along from the opposite edge; this and other chips which interrupt cortex or patina could have arisen fortuitously. Both episodes of deliberate working could be accommodated within the Neolithic period. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. …
