Copper alloy chisel or awl, possibly of Late Bronze Age date The tool is complete (with a length of 88.1mm and a weight of 9.5g). The tang has a short edge at its apex (1.3mm wide and 0.4mm thick) and is square-sectioned for nearly one-third of its length (for 27mm), gradually widening (to a maximum square-section of 3.7mm). The mid-part of the tool is circular-sectioned (with a diameter of 4.3mm) for a little over one-third of its length (for 31mm). The blade is sub-square sectioned (for 32mm) and each of the four faces on the top of the blade has a clear forged facet, which is poss…

Late Bronze Age bronze tanged and collared chisel, probably of Ewart Park metalworking industry, corresponding with Needham's (1996) Period 7, dated to 950 - 750BC. The chisel is incomplete, missing the tang and with a little peripheral damage (with a surviving length of 34.1mm and a weight of 7.4g). The tang was truncated in antiquity and survives as a square-sectioned stub (with a surviving length of 4.0mm and a width and thickness of 5.2mm and 4.3mm respectively). The chisel is thickest at the shoulder (at 4.9mm). The shoulder mouldings are triangular, with the top edge perpendi…

Object type: FLAT AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Calderdale
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A cast copper alloy flat axe of Early Bronze Age date, about 2200 BC - 1950 BC. The axe is probably a broad butt flat axe of Migdale type (decorated Variant) and is decorated with rain pattern. The blade flares from about two thirds of the way from the butt, with angular shoulders; this may have been secondary hammering; the cutting edge was narrower to begin with. The blade is 70.3mm wide at the tips, and flares from 46.2mm wide at the change of angle. The butt is 33.2mm wide half way along, and has a rounded end. The cutting edge is damaged, and is mainly missing. It is 6.2mm thi…

Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Bath and North East Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy Bronze Age blade fragment from a knife. This has a low oval cross-section with tapered blades on either side. At one end the edges are tapered inwards the tip, which is now truncated. The rear of the blade is also truncated make it impossible to determine if it had a socket or tang. When viewed in side profile blade has a slight curve, which straightens out towards the tip, this curve does not look to be post-depositional damage and is therefore part of the design on the knife. The date range for this type of knife is c1100 to c800BC.

Dark grey flint with cortex and cloudy patina plano-convex knife. Flake with a bulb on its ventral side and with parallel strips of invasive scalar retouch on both its long sides removing cortex and forming durable cutting edges. These have acquired an identical patina to the ventral side, which extends to an obliquely snapped end. Suggested date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, 2700-1600 BC. Length: 33.4mm, Width: 18.2mm, Thickness: 8.0mm, Weight: 5.68gms.

Object type: PLANO CONVEX KNIFE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint thickly patinated with cortex possible plano-convex knife. Elongated flake of plano-convex section. Minimal short abrupt pressure flaked retouch along one edge has trimmed cortex to produce a single durable cutting edge. It seems likely that the patination of the ventral surface was acquired before this reworking. Suggested date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, 2700-1600 BC. Length: 45.0mm, Width: 20mm, Thickness: 7.6mm, Weight: 8.79gms.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark grey flint with slight cloudy patina patches and with cortex scraper. Tiny thumbnail scraper with short abrupt retouch trimming cortex from the dorsal side and with light rippling on the ventral. The good condition and survival of a sharp spur of projecting flint may suggest this object to have been incorporated and remained in a sealed deposit until relatively shortly before its discovery. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 17.3mm, Width: 18.9mm, Thickness: 4.1mm, Weight: 1.55gms.

County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark brown flint of good quality scraper. Flake with broad flakes removed from its dorsal side and with a prominent bulb on the ventral. Invasive retouch, some directed from the edges inwards and executed from the dorsal aspect, appears to have been followed by grinding or battering of parts of the edge, which is probably not fortuitous damage given the good condition of most of the surface. Suggested date: Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC. Length: 36.6mm, Width: 27.7mm, Thickness: 9.5mm, Weight: 10.46gms.

An incomplete cast copper alloy socketed axehead, of possible Late Bronze Age dating (1000 BC to 800 BC). Probably less than 40% of the socketed axehead is present, consisting of part of the main body, the base of the socket and the blade edge. The fragment is sub rectangular in plan, and triangular in section. The socket is sub-rectangular in shape. Casting ridges are present along one of the sides. The blade edge is rounded and expands out at one side, forming a sharp curve (or hook), the other side shows signs of damage. The blade shows signs of breakage and damage. The cutting …
