Object type: TESSERA
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Grey Limestone possible tessera. Irregular stone cube whose faces were possibly defined by drafts of an axe or chisel, and subsequently chipped. The smoothest side may have formed part of a mosaic floor. The use of larger tesserae would be more likely in the later Roman period, as part of an undecorated floor, a simple geometric design, or in the border to a figurative design. Suggested date: possibly Late Roman, 200-375. Length: 28.4mm, Width: 20.9mm, Thickness: 22.6mm, Weight: 27.28gms.
