Each facet on the double bezel has an engraved figure, and the pair represent the Annunciation or the announcement of the Incarnation by the angel Gabriel to Mary (Luke 1:26-38), with Gabriel on the left and Mary on the right. A severely double-struck Medieval short cross penny of Henry III. Probably Class 7b, dating from c. AD 1222-c. 1236. Uncertain moneyer. Probably Canterbury mint. Cf. North 1994 Vol I, p. 223, no. 979, (A)-(D). The letter A is square in shape on the reverse, in keeping with the style of Class 7b. In addition, the style of the hair curls is similarly upturned and crescentic. The bust is positioned very close to the lower inner circle, with a ringed collar.
