Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Medieval copper alloy finger-ring, dating 13th-14th century. The object is formed of a slender band with a lozenge shaped bezel. The band appears to have been soldered to the bezel. The bezel has a green glass fitting with a moulded decoration of lines radiating around the edge. The band has been broken and bent out of shape, with some of the band probably missing. The object is now in two parts, though this is recent damage. The metal has a mid-light brown pattination. No published examples are quite like this one, but finger-rings of this shape and style tend to date from the 1…

Object type: PILGRIM BADGE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a Medieval lead alloy pilgrim badge, dating to the 15th century. Roughly a quarter of the object remains, which would have originally been circular in shape. The object is decorated on one side only, with a border running around the edge and a foliate design that appears to form an oval shape just within the band. There appears to be writing within the border, though this is now illegible. In the centre is an image with radiating lines surrounding it, though now it is impossible to discern the central image. Below the radiating lines is an open circle, like the symbol om…

An incomplete polyhedral chape, probably dating to the Medieval period. The object is formed of a solid cast polyhedral shape with a small rounded projection on one end and an open flaring shank projecting below. The shank has been broken at the base and there is compacted material within. The object has a dark brown pattination. Similar examples have been found on the PAS database (SWYOR-B1FFB4 and LIN-C71A35), though often made of silver and none have the projection on the top. They can date from the Early Mediteval to Medieval period, though undecorated examples are likely to be…

A Late Medieval ampulla, dating to the 15th century. The ampulla is circular with a flaring neck that tapers to a circular body and ends in a squared base. At the shoulder are two square handles, attached half-way up the neck and on the body. There are compass drawn decorations on both sides, forming concentric engraved circles. The object has a dark grey pattination and there is white concreted material on one side and in the mouth of the ampulla. No parallels have been found with the squared base, but this type of object tends to date to the Late Medieval period. Dimensions: leng…

An incomplete Late Medieval lead alloy pilgrim badge of the Virgin Mary and child, dating to the late 15th century. The badge depicts the Virgin Mary in a long gown, holding a sceptre in right hand and the baby Jesus in the left. The Virgin is crowned and the child has a halo with radiating rays projecting. There would have been a dove below, but this is no longer present. On the reverse are two integral rivets, following the line of a casting seem running vertically down the badge. The object has a mid-dark grey pattination. Similar examples can be found in Spencer (1998, nos. 16…
