Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with central moulded aperture of diameter 10.7mm, Walton Rogers form A1. The surface is rough, but completely unpatinated, arguing either a recent date or recent disturbance from a sealed context. At all events, the textured surface is an original feature rather than one arising from wear or abrasion. It may have contributed a coruscating effect were the whorl to be used in the sunshine. Similar textures have been recorded on whorls of this type from Bigby, Lincolnshire. The mass suggests this example would be used to ply a cord. Sugges…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Iron possible scissors fragment. Wrought Iron object comprising two overlapping plates, revealed by breakage, which appear to have changed from a flattened form at one end to acquire a thicker section at the other, here respectively interpreted as the blades and handles of a pair of scissors. A circular spot on both sides towards the flatter end of the object may mark a pin on which the blades pivoted (indicated by the green arrow). The thicker ends overlap; their curvature might alternatively suggest this to be a pair of light tongs, though corrosion conceals forms only accessible to…
