Broad period: UNKNOWN
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy finger-ring, probably a 'snake ring' of Roman date The ring is of circular, coiled form and is complete with two coils (giving a maximum width of 13.4mm, an external diameter of 25.9mm, an internal diameter of 19.7mm and a weight of 15.1g). Lead weight. Cast conical flat-based standing weight with a central moulded longitudinal tapered aperture of length c.3.5mmand with slightly fluted sides. Patinated overall. The mass might suggest this to represent ten Viking Age Scandinavian units of 4.07gms, as used for bullion transactions. Against this suggestion, David Haldenby kindly comments that weights of this period are not usually perforated (pers. comm.; cf Haldenby, D. and Richards 2016, J.D., Internet Archaeology no. 42) . This is, however, a feature of fishing weights of a more general medieval currency. Suggested date:…

An unpatinated struck flint implement of uncertain form, possibly an ovate or a roughout for an axe or similar implement. It is struck from a mottled pale grey flint and is of crude handaxe form with pointed oval cross-section, tapering in profile at both ends. The object has very crude bifacial working, although some of the flakes, particularly at each end, may well be the result of damage rather than deliberate striking of the flint. It measures 114.88mm in length, 66.28mm in width, 27.19mm in thickness, and 165.80g in weight. This is a flint object of uncertain function. It is p…

A cast lead weight or possibly spindle whorl. It is circular and has a slightly domed top and bottom and convex sides giving it an oval cross section. There is a oval hole runing through the centre and seven evenly spaced grooves running down the sides. It is 17.8mm in diameter, 8.8mm thick and weights 9.35g, the hole is 6.3 by 5.5mm across. Plain spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are hard to date precisely although most are late Medieval - Post Medieval.
