Late Medieval to post medieval lead weight, probably of 15th to 17th century date The lead weight is of 'nested' type and is complete with a sub-circular shape (with a maximum diameter of 33.0mm and a minimum diameter at the rim of 31.5mm)The mouth is flat-topped (2.6mm thick) and is not decorated. The sides are straight and angled outwards (giving the weight an external depth of 9.6mm and an internal depth of 6.5mm-7.8mm). The base is circular (of 21mm diameter) and there is no applied decoration on either the base or sides. The surface has a grey-brown corrosion. The weight weigh…

Lead weight of uncertain date, probably medieval to post medieval The lead weight is of suspension type with an integral loop at the apex and is complete (with a length of 40.1mm). The loop is rectangular-sectioned (4.4mm thick and 13.3mm long) with a central, circular perforation (5.8mm diameter) and is now slightly distorted. The body of the weight is sub-circular with straight sides, diverging towards the base (with a minimum diameter of 11.7mm and a maximum of 19.8mm). The base is flat and has four perforations, which appear to emerge on the sides, above the base. These may h…

A cast lead weight or possibly spindle whorl. It is circular and has a slightly domed top and bottom and convex sides giving it an oval cross section. There is a oval hole runing through the centre and seven evenly spaced grooves running down the sides. It is 17.8mm in diameter, 8.8mm thick and weights 9.35g, the hole is 6.3 by 5.5mm across. Plain spindle whorls and weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are hard to date precisely although most are late Medieval - Post Medieval.

Lead weight. Cast conical flat-based standing weight with a central moulded longitudinal tapered aperture of length c.3.5mmand with slightly fluted sides. Patinated overall. The mass might suggest this to represent ten Viking Age Scandinavian units of 4.07gms, as used for bullion transactions. Against this suggestion, David Haldenby kindly comments that weights of this period are not usually perforated (pers. comm.; cf Haldenby, D. and Richards 2016, J.D., Internet Archaeology no. 42) . This is, however, a feature of fishing weights of a more general medieval currency. Suggested date:…
