Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint end scraper, probably dating from the Bronze Age (c. 2350 - 801 BC).
The tool is on a tertiary flake, is truncated-oval in plan and of broadly trapezoidal cross section. A flat area at the proximal end probably represents part of the striking platform. A concave area below this, on the ventral surface, may be a large bulbar scar. Retouch at the rounded distal end is short and abrupt. The exposed surface of the flint is white due to deposition in alkaline soil.
Length: 32.7mm; width: 30.9mm; thickness: 9.1mm. Weight: 9.07g.

A retouched flint flake, probably dating from the Mid Bronze Age to Early Iron Age (c. 1600 BC - c. 401 BC).
This irregular, secondary flake shows evidence of crossed abrupt retouch at one end. The white surface of the exposed flint is the result of deposition within alkaline soil.

A flint end scraper, probably dating from Bronze Age (c. 2350 - 801 BC).
The tool is on a tertiary flake, 'pear-shaped' and of trapezoidal cross section. Retouch, confined to the rounded distal end, is long, sub-parallel and abrupt. On the ventral surface, the bulb of percussion is low and the ripples are diffuse. The white surface of the exposed flint is indicative of deposition in alkaline soil; there is also some iron staining.

A flint end scraper of probable Mid Bronze Age to Early Iron Age date (c. 1600 - 401 BC).
The tool has been made from a secondary flake, is sub-rectangular in plan and of broadly trapezoidal cross section. Retouch is confined to the rounded distal end and is long, sub-parallel and abrupt. The angled proximal end represents a deliberate truncation and removal of the striking point. The white surface of the exposed flint indicates deposition within an alkaline soil.

A struck flint flake of uncertain date.
This secondary, pear-shaped flake has a pronounced bulb of percussion and several longitudinal arrises on the dorsal surface. The left-hand mesial edge has the appearance of having been ground; however, this may simply reflect the nature of the material at this point. The white surface is the result of deposition within alkaline soil.

A flint end and side scraper, probably dating from the Neolithic to Bronze Age (c. 4000 BC - c. 801 BC).
The scraper, which is on a secondary, pear-shaped flake, is of sub-triangular section and has limited retouch to approximately half of its perimeter. This retouch is short to long, sub-parallel and abrupt. The ventral surface has an inward curvature, but no trace survives of the striking point. The white surface of the exposed flint is the result of deposition within alkaline soil.

A flint side and end scraper of probable Mid Bronze Age to Early Iron Age date (c. 1600 - 401 BC).
The tool has been made from an elongated tertiary flake, which is of trapezoidal cross section, its irregular sides diverging towards the distal end. The clearest retouch is to the right-hand mesial edge and is long, sub-parallel and abrupt; the distal end also appears to have abrupt retouch, but unlike that to the mesial edge, this flaking cuts through the white surface patination and probably represents a later reworking. Part of the core platform remains, with an adjacent striking …
