Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint thumbnail scraper of probable Neolithic date (c. 4000 - c. 2351 BC). The tool is subcircular in plan, of 'D-shaped' section and has been struck on a secondary flake. The clearest retouch is at the distal end, where it is long, sub-parallel and abrupt; the mesial sides appear to have been roughly shaped, with the occasional abrupt retouch visible. Evidence of platform preparation is visible on the dorsal surface, adjacent to the striking platform. The ventral surface has a low bulb with bulbar scar but no ripples. The white surface is the result of deposition within alkaline…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint end scraper of probable Neolithic to Bronze Age date (c. 4000 - c. 801 BC). The tool is suboval in plan, of triangular section and has been struck on a secondary flake. Retouch is confined to the distal end and is long, sub-parallel and abrupt. Part of the striking platform remains, as does a pronounced bulb of percussion with bulbar scar. The white surface is the result of deposition within alkaline soil. Length: 37.2mm; width: 34.6mm; thickness: 13.6mm. Weight: 17.96g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint end scraper of probable Neolithic to Bronze Age date (c. 4000 - 801 BC). The tool has been made from a tertiary flake which is of elongated-suboval shape and 'D-shaped' cross section. Retouch, confined to the rounded distal end, is long, sub-parallel and abrupt. Part of the striking platform remains, adjacent to which, on the ventral surface, there is a bulbar scar. The white surface of the exposed flint indicates deposition within an alkaline soil. Length: 51.4mm; width: 29.5mm; thickness: 7.1mm. Weight: 12.49g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper of probable Neolithic to Bronze Age date (c. 4000 - 801 BC). The tool, which has been made on a thick secondary blade, is sub-rectangular in plan and of sub-trapezoidal section. The remaining cortex occupies the central portion of the dorsal surface. The mesial edges have abrupt, irregular retouch; the distal end is more carefully worked, with long, sub-parallel and abrupt retouch. The opposing end has been squared off, possibly by grinding or abrupt retouch, and the surface above exhibits long, sub-parallel, low angle retouch, which is interrupted by a fossil inclu…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper of possible Neolithic date (c. 4000 - 2351BC). The tool has been made from a long, parallel-sided flake which has been struck at 45 degrees to the platform, part of which survives. The striking point is visible but there is no clear bulb and no ripples. An area on the dorsal surface, adjacent to the platform, displays possible evidence for core preparation. A single arrise extends longitudinally down the centre, creating a triangular profile. Retouch, confined to the rounded distal end, is long, scaled and abrupt to semi-abrupt. Contact with alkaline soil has result…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper of probable Mid Bronze Age to Early Iron Age date (c. 1601 - 401 BC). The tool is suboval in plan and irregular in section. This is a secondary flake, the striking platform covered with cortex, indicating that the tool has been made from a natural nodule or roughly worked core. The lack of arrises on the dorsal surface also attests to this fact. Retouch has occurred at the rounded distal end, continuing to approximately halfway down the left-hand mesial edge, and is long, abrupt and scaled. Contact with alkaline soil has resulted in the formation of a white surface.…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete Neolithic scraper made on a flake of mottled grey flint which is also partly comprised of a matt grey inclusion. The scraper is roughly triangular in shape and is gently domed in profile. The ventral surface is smooth with a distinctive, large flake scar (on the left hand side in the photo). The dorsal surface has 3 or 4 large flake scars and there are at least three areas of quite steep retouch on the edges. The flint is opaque. It is 31mm long, 27.5mm wide and 7mm thick. It weighs 7g.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper of probable Neolithic to Bronze Age date (c. 4000 - 801 BC). The tool is roughly 'D-shaped' in plan, trapezoidal in section and has been made from a tertiary flake. The butt of the scraper has been removed, giving the tool a truncated appearance. Retouch, confined to the rounded distal end, is long, scaled and abrupt. Contact with alkaline soil has resulted in the formation of a white surface. Length: 28.4mm; width: 37mm; thickness: 8.8mm. Weight: 10.71g.

Record ID: BH-F4F352
Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper of probable Bronze Age date. The scraper is 'D-shaped' in plan and section, its truncated appearance probably created by the removal of the butt. The tool has been made from a secondary flake, probably from a natural nodule, with much of the dorsal surface covered by cortex. Retouch, located at the rounded distal end and extending to the sides, is long, sub-parallel and abrupt. The exposed areas are heavily patinated due to deposition within alkaline soil. Length: 27mm; width: 43.5mm; thickness: 20.7mm. Weight: 26.07g.

County: Hertfordshire

An elongated flint flake (struck), possibly retouched to form a hollow scraper. Suggested date: Neolithic to Early Bronze Age (c. 4000 - 1000 BC). The soft hammer flake is irregular in plan, trapezoidal to triangular in section and retains part of its striking platform and adjacent point of percussion. Two concave areas on the left-hand mesial edge exhibit probable evidence of short, abrupt retouch. Contact with alkaline soil has resulted in the formation of a white to off-white surface Length: 57.4mm; width: 31mm; thickness: 9.9mm. Weight: 14.22g.

A flint scraper of probable Neolithic to Bronze Age date (c. 4000 - 801 BC). The tool is sub-rectangular in plan, of irregular section and has been made from a tertiary flake. Evidence of retouch can be seen at the rounded, projecting distal end; this retouch is long, scaled and semi-abrupt. The striking platform displays clear evidence of preparation on its dorsal side. On the ventral surface, adjacent to this platform, is a point of percussion and bulb, with no rippling below. Contact with alkaline soil has resulted in the formation of a white to off-white surface. The darker cor…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper of probable Neolithic to Bronze Age date (c. 4000 - 801 BC). The tool is roughly 'D-shaped' in plan and section and has been made from a tertiary flake of soft hammer production. Retouch to the rounded end is long, scaled and abrupt, with possible semi-abrupt retouch to left-hand mesial edge. Contact with alkaline soil has resulted in the formation of a mottled white surface. The bulb of percussion is absent from the proximal end, whose squared-off form may be the result of damage. Length: 34.4mm; width: 37.7mm; thickness: 13.9mm. Weight: 21.02g.
