Workflow stage: Published
A copper alloy Roman or early medieval zoomorphic buckle of Hawkes and Dunning Type IIA dating to the period c. AD 350 - 450. The buckle consists of a D-shaped frame with bevelled edges and a U-shaped pin rest. It features a symmetrical design of two dolphins facing one another, their mouths meeting at the pin rest. Lead musket ball. Cast ball with one limited flattened artea, though probably arising from recent abrasion. The metal is grey and unpatinated, and may suggest either a relatively recent date or recent disturbance from a sealed context. The mass, at about one ounce, would qualify this as for use with a smoothbore muzzle loading firearm of military specification. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800.
Diameter: 17.2mm, Weight: 28.28gms.

Lead musket ball. Cast ball, originally probably spherical but compressed and with damage on one side possibly indicating either that it has penetrated a thin object such as a plank, or that it has struck a yielding material such as clay. Patinated overall. The mass, at over one ounce, would qualify this for use with a muzzle loading firearm of military specification. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800.
Diameter: 19.1mm, Length: 15.1mm, Weight: 29.05gms.

Lead musket ball. Cast ball with a small flat area on one side and a roughened area on the opposite side, the latter probably impact damage. The metal is grey and unpatinated, suggesting either a more recent date or recent disturbance from a sealed context. The mass, at over an ounce, would be apt to use with a muzzle loading smoothbore firearm of military specification. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800.

Lead musket ball. Cast ball with a mould line, a limited flattened area on one side, either from use of a ramrod or from impact, and a deep and probably recent nick. The metal is only lightly patinated, which may suggest either a more recent date or recent disturbance from a sealed context. The mass, at over an ounce, would be apt to use with a muzzle loading smoothbore firearm of military specification. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800.

Lead musket ball. Cast ball elongated, belted by set up and striated by a combination of gas erosion (longitudinal striations, relative to the gun barrel at time of firing); both are distorting effects at the time of firing arising from an imperfect match of ball and barrel. Patinated overall, and with roughening of one end arising from impact or passage through a flimsy object. The mass, at over an ounce, would qualify this for use with a smoothbore muzzle loading firearm of military specification. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800.

A stamped legend appears on both sides, remaining partially legible on one: [---] / [---] / [--] LONDON [--]. This is probably from an Ohelndorff guano fertiliser bag; the company was active from the 1880s to the 1920s. Suggested date: Modern, 1885-1925.

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy buckle. Cast rectangular buckle frame of rounded section with feet that project beyond the strap bar; the strap bar, which is slightly set back from the frame, retains a patch of rust suggesting the object was deposited with an iron pin attached (now lost). The outer edge of the frame is nicked for a pin rest. Lightly twisted. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1650.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy weight. Cast discoid weight with upstanding bevelled rim, from a set of nesting weights. Black oil, paint or lacquer occurs on the flat base. These weights sometimes came in a metal box as a product of Nuremburg in the early post-medieval period, an era which was also noted for the treatment of metal objects with linseed oil. The mass does not obviously correlate with recent weights and measures although the form of such weights remained unchanged for a long period. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700.
