Tinned cast copper alloy shuttle-shaped shoe buckle with a drilled frame for a separate spindle. The frame consists of two interlacing ribbons, creating an openwork pattern of an outer annular border and an inner narrower rectangular border, that meet at each corner of the frame where there is moulded foliage. There are moulded rosettes above each spindle hole and at the apex of the two outer edges, and between these, there are moulded squares within circles running along the outer frame and transverse lines across the inner frame, making it appear like ropework. Lead musket ball. Cast ball elongated, belted by set up and striated by a combination of gas erosion (longitudinal striations, relative to the gun barrel at time of firing); both are distorting effects at the time of firing arising from an imperfect match of ball and barrel. Patinated overall, and with roughening of one end arising from impact or passage through a flimsy object. The mass, at over an ounce, would qualify this for use with a smoothbore muzzle loading firearm of military specification. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1800. Copper alloy weight. Cast discoid weight with upstanding bevelled rim, from a set of nesting weights. Black oil, paint or lacquer occurs on the flat base. These weights sometimes came in a metal box as a product of Nuremburg in the early post-medieval period, an era which was also noted for the treatment of metal objects with linseed oil. The mass does not obviously correlate with recent weights and measures although the form of such weights remained unchanged for a long period. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700.
