Object type: STRAP END
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Buckinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An Early-Medieval copper-alloy strap-end. The strap-end is of flat section and is sub-rectangular, having outward bowing long sides. The now-missing strap would have been held in a slot between the two plates at the top, secured by the two rivets, which are located a short distance down from the scalloped top side. At this end, a crudely incised groove creates a sub-rectangular panel which encloses not only the rivets, but also, immediately below these, an incised saltire. The central third of the strap-end is occupied by an incised geometric design. A pair of multi-stranded lozeng…

An unidentified copper-alloy artefact. The artefact is of flattened-sub-spherical form, with three roughly circular apertures and an openwork design. The same design occupies both of the wider faces of the piece; it has an inverted-triangular aperture at the centre, from which radiate six ribs. Further ribs branch outwards from these six, creating a series of irregular openings, albeit arranged in a broadly symmetrical design. A plain band extends around the centre of the object, separating the two openwork panels. This band is interrupted by two of the aforementioned sub-circular …

An unidentified copper-alloy and iron object. The artefact comprises a copper-alloy cylinder, from the base of which projects a straight-sided, flaring slot. The corroded remains of a flat-sectioned iron element are contained within this slot. The upper surface of the cylindrical portion is decorated by a pair 'D-shaped' symbols, each comprised of a series of grooves and ridges, their curved sides adjacent to one another. Parallel grooves and ridges, aligned longitudinally, also decorate the surface on each side of the slot. One of these sides is now heavily damaged. Length: 20.…

A copper-alloy lid from a Medieval cased mirror. The lid is circular and of flat section, with a right-angled rim projecting downwards from the edge. The hinge, located at the back, would originally have comprised two rounded, perforated lugs, separated from one another by a gap and linked by a bar; now, only the right-hand lug remains, the other having been lost in antiquity. A unperforated lug handle extends forward from the opposite end of the case. The slightly domed upper surface of the case bears a cross design comprised of double rows of back-to-back punched triangles. A lin…

An Early-Medieval to Medieval copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount. The mount has a sub-triangular plate, with outward-bowing sides and an apex loop. The surface design, moulded in high relief, takes the form of a quadruped, which stands to the right, his left foreleg raised, his head tilted backwards and mouth open. The tail loops underneath the body, curving upwards between the hindquarters and extending across the back, terminating adjacent to the ears, in a downward curve. The apex loop has a rounded top, circular perforation and a pair of flanking lobes at its base. In addition, a…

An incomplete copper-alloy Roman mount. This mount comprises a rectangular plate (now damaged), with part of a curved projection on the top left-hand corner. A panel of enamelled cells occupies most of the upper surface of the plate. Two lozenge-shaped cells are located at the centre, set side-by-side and retaining parts of their dark blue insets. A border of inward-pointing triangular cells surrounds these lozenges; one retains its entire red enamel inset, and traces of red survive in two of the others. An incised groove extends around the panel of cells, with a border of interloc…

Part of a Roman copper-alloy cart fitting. The hollow-cast piece takes the form of a three-dimensional representation of an eagle emerging from a calyx. The neck of the bird projects vertically upwards from between the two surviving petals, curving into the forward-facing head. Much of the front part of the neck has been lost in antiquity, but that which remains displays three rows of moulded feathers, the upper of which projects outwards on either side. The eyes are oval, have moulded lids and incuse pellet pupils. In the tip of its beak the bird holds a spherical object. A raised…

A Roman copper-alloy finger ring. The object has been made by cutting off the end of a penannular type bracelet and rolling it to form a subcircular finger ring. A stamped flower head design, which comprises five pointed-oval petals around a central ring, decorates the upper surface of the bracelet terminal. Unlike the rest of the ring, which is curved, this end has been left flat, possibly in an attempt to create a bezel-like feature. A decorative band of alternating grooves and ridges (the outer two n…
