Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper-alloy openwork mount or stud of probable post-medieval date (c.AD 1500-1700). The outlne of the mount is broadly square with lobes projecting both from each corner and in between. The centre of the mount is in the form of a cross with a square centre boss. The spaces between the arms of the cross and the outer quatrefoil rim are open and could be descirbed as 'heart-shaped'. The front of the mount is slightly domed. There is a single large square-sectioned spike for attachment protruding from the centre of the reverse, the size suggesting this is either a harness mou…

Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a copper alloy vessel of probable medieval to early post-medieval date. The fragment consists of part of the flat, upright rim and some of the body of the vessel. Internally the rim slopes down and inwards to the wall of the vessel. The curviture suggests a large bowl-shaped vessel such as a cauldron; there is sooting on the external wall of the sherd, probably from use in a domestic fire and indicates its use as a domestic cooking vessel. Dating such objects without contextual association or other diagnostic evidence (such as patterning) is very hard; copper alloy cooki…

County: Suffolk

Description: An incomplete silver gilt reliquary pendant, probably late medieval or early post medieval in date. This pendant is constructed of two flat circular discs both of which are soldered to a central rim. This would originally have had a suspension loop projecting from it, this is now missing and a scar remains where it would have been. This method of construction creates a hollow circular pendant with two decorated faces. One face has an engraved Lamb of God (Agnus Dei). The lamb is haloed, facing left with its head turned and looking rearwards. A banner or flag is at a…

Object type: COIN WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn copper alloy square coin weight of the post-medieval period. The coin weight may have had designs on both faces however wear and corrosion makes either side unidentifiable. The weight has slightly bevelled edges and the upper face may have the image of a figure on it, but as mentioned this is unclear. The weight weighs 5 grams or 75.6 grains; a double crown (half unite) of James I, 2nd coinage (Withers and Withers 1995:13) would have weighed 77.5 grains, so it is probable that this the the donomination for which this weight was made. Although unites were only produced for a sho…

47 small pieces of flint of uncertain date and function, possibly debitage from flint working. The flints are all an opaque mottled light grey/white colour and are predominantly less than 10x10mm in size. Some are partially patinated and some pieces retain cortex. The total weight of the collection is 11.8g. Though these flints do not display evidence of having been struck, they are recorded as they are from an area without naturally occuring flint. They may be gravel or grit brought in as part of a bird rearing routine or other reason.
