A Medeival copper alloy strap end. The strap end is made from a single sheet of metal folded lengthways; it is broadly rectangular in plan. One end tapers to an angled terminal, whilst the other end is open for attacment to the strap. The front face is decorated with a cross hatch pattern and there are small traces of gilding on the surface. At the open end is a circular perforation. The back face is plain with a circular perforation, here the sheet has folded backwards, probably due to damage. There are no rivets are visible on the item.

Copper alloy strap end that is made from a long and thick, oval cross-section rod. The main body is undecorated, the forward edge is decorated with an animal facemask with a double collar behind. The attachment end is slotted for the strap, there is a single copper alloy rivet in place. This is a Thomas class B type 1 which dates it to the late 8th early 11th century.

Early Medieval (Late Anglo-Saxon) copper alloy strap-end of late 8th to 11th century date
The strap-end is of Thomas' (2003, p 4)[1] Class B, Type 1 and is complete but is slightly distorted (with a length of 37.5mm and a weight of 3.4g). The strap-end is widest at the split attachment end (at 8.5mm wide and 4.3mm deep), which is near-straight and the two attachment rivets remain in place. Incomplete medieval copper alloy composite strap-end. Circular spacer with elongated terminal, broken stumps of two forked projections. Traces of solder on both faces. Front and back-plates missing. Extant length 34mm. Width 22mm. Thickness 1.5mm. See Egan and Pritchard (2002, 141, fig.92, no.650). 14th - 15th century.
