Object type: BELL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy spherical bell fragment. Cast fragment, comprising part of the upper hemisphere of a one-piece cast bell with a single blow hole and a low rectangular top loop. A greyish tint may indicate the presence of tin in the metal mix, perhaps for its acoustic properties. The interior surface is stained by rust, suggesting the loss and deposit of the bell with its iron clapper, and its subsequent decay and breakage. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1700. Diameter (in excess of): 27mm, Height: 23.7mm, Thickness (wall near middle): 1.9mm, Weight: 8.70gms.

Copper alloy buckle. Cast rectangular single looped buckle frame with a thickened outer edge with four horizontally incised lines flanking a deeper pin rest; the strap bar has low knops at its ends, though the appearance of partial moulded decoration is probably merely a casting flaw. Lead alloy ampulla. Hollow cast bag shaped pilgrim badge, with snall angular loops at its neck. One side of the body bears radial ridges resembling those of a cockle shell. The other side bears a flat circular panel within a low rim, which is either very worn or, more likely, was never adorned in relief, and a horizontal moulded zone of diagonal vertical strokes in low relief between the side handles. These may be purely decorative, but could represent initials or letters of the invocation Ave Maria, or Hail Mary. The flared top of the ampulla is bent back and splayed, now lying on th…

Copper alloy buckle frame. Cast sub-rectangulaer buckle frame with moulded edges and a rectangular tab projecting from either end. This buckle may have lost a separate steel spindle, a small chape, or a strap bar, though there is no clear marking on the inner edge of the frame to confirm this.
