Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill type (Mackreth Part 3, Group 4a-4.b, flat wing ends type) and probably of late 1st - early 2nd century AD date.
The brooch is fragmentary, represented by the head only and was comparatively substantial (with a surviving length of 27.5mm, a surviving depth of 16.1mm and a weight of 15.4g). The missing spring was secured between lateral perforated lugs and the chord was probably tensioned by a hook at the head, in a Polden Hill, hook type arrangement. The wings are truncated but both ends appear to be near to the te…

Copper alloy fragment, probably the outside edge fragment of a medieval buckle
The probable buckle is fragmentary, distorted and is incomplete (with a surviving length of 57.7mm and a weight of 14.7g) and was likely to be of oval or D-shaped form. The frame was of oval section, widest on the outside edge (with a width of 11.0mm and a thickness of 6.3mm). The rear of the outside edge was bevelled. There is a prominent notch to accommodate the pin on the widest part of the frame. The frame has corroded and tapered to a point on both ends and one end has distorted to form a loop. No a…

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Aucissa type and of 1st century AD date
The brooch is flattened and incomplete, missing the pin (with a distorted length and depth of 62.3mm and 5.8mm respectively and with a weight of 2.2g). The missing pin was hinged within the rolled head (with a depth of 2.8mm and a width of 10.7mm) and there is slot to accommodate the pin. The brooch is heavily-corroded but it is possible that the remnants of letter forms are present on the top of the bow, with a possible 'I S' from the word AVCISSA. The bow is of sheet metal (0.5mm thick) and has straight side…
