Object type: MICROLITH
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Proximal end of a thin knapped flint blade with a large, deliberate notch, probably a precursor to being snapped to form a microlith of Mesolithic date, 9000-4000 BC. The piece has a very small bulb of percussion on the ventral face and two parallel aris running down the length of the dorsal face from previous parallel removals. The right edge (as seen from the dorsal face) is notched about half way along with abrupt retouch worked from the ventral face, the retouch extends towards the proximal end. The opposite edge has regularly spaced small chips from the distal face giving a serra…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Knapped flint multi-platform core of later Neolithic or Bronze Age date, c. 3,300 to 800 BC, possibly originally discoidal. Shallow scars from the removal of large, broad flakes on both faces, irregular (accidental) break along one edge and possibly accidental break along the opposite edge. Both faces have evidence for working in at least two directions at 45 degrees to each other. Removals appear to have been taken off other removals on the other face, rather than a prepared platform leaving an acute angle between the working faces. It is 41.9mm by 35.0mm and 18.0mm thick; it weig…

Knapped flint discoidal core of later Neolithic or Bronze Age date, c. 3,300 to 800 BC. Shallow scars from the removal of broad flakes on both faces, irregular (accidental) break along one edge. On one face most removals have been taken at about 45 degrees to this break with a few worked from a platform at the break or just to one side. The other face has removals from all angles apart from along the break. Removals appear to have been taken off other removals on the other face, rather than a prepared platform leaving an acute angle between the working faces. There are a few small pat…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Knapped doubled ended scraper made of a secondary flint flake. It is broadly trapezoid in plan with straight sides and convex ends, one wider than the other. The bulb of percussion has been removed through retouch although the ripples suggest it was at the narrower end. The aris and ripples on the dorsal face suggest some previous smaller, parallel removals form the same platform as well as larger, hard hammer removals from different directions at the other end. There is a patch of cortex covering c.20% of the surface along the right edge of the dorsal face. The retouch extends aro…

The flint is a translucent pale grey. the arrowhead is 26.3mm long, 15.6mm wide and 4.4mm thick; it weighs 1.72 grams.
