Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An undated lead-alloy weight. The weight is discoidal, its upper surface decorated by four concentric relief-moulded ridges, the underside plain. Diameter: 34.7mm; thickness: 6.1mm. Weight: 46.9g (equivalent to 1.65 ounces averdepois). Of the five similar weights illustrated by Biggs and Withers (2000: 25), nos. 44 - 47 weighed between 55 and 57g and were therefore suggested to be two ounce weights. This example is slightly lighter and, if it relates to the averdepois system, is more likely to be an ounce and a half.
