Record ID: NLM-FCDF67
Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Copper alloy unidentified object. Cast bun-shaped object with a flat-topped sub-spherical body, possibly a handle, above a sharply stepped moulded part from which projects a rounded pad with a possible character in low relief. It is uncertain whether this is an initial letter in florid style, an indeterminate motif, or even an oriental character: at all events it would, being a positive feature, leave a negative impression if used as a stamp or seal. A trial (illustrated) produced no clear mark. The flat top appears to have been hammered or pounded in the course of its use. Suggested …

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead weight. Cast plano-convex or conical weight with an originally central moulded aperture tapering from a basal diameter of 5.5mm to an apical diameter of 2mm, the latter perhaps enlarged by wear. About one third of the object has been removed by a straight cut; the extent of thick white patina suggests this took place in antiquity. The hole would be apt to use as a line weight. Suggested date: possibly Medieval, 1200-1500.
Diameter: 26.3mm, Height: 14.9mm, Weight: 42.59gms.

Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Lead spindle whorl. Cast plano-convex whorl with (now) off-centre moulded aperture of diameter 10.2mm. This appears to have been crudely cast from the impression left by one half of a biconvex whorl; irregularities on the convex side may be the poorly impressed or poorly rendered traces of a decorative scheme of lines and pellets. Chipped or miscast on one side. Patinated and/or encrusted (?with sand from a casting bed). Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600.
Diameter: 34.4mm, Thickness: 8.4mm, Weight: 32.97gms.

Lead shot. Cast ball with limited flattened area, possibly from use of a ram rod. The size and mass may suggest this to be for a light fowling piece or 'rook and rabbit' gun, if not from a charge of buckshot. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1700-1800.

Copper alloy finger ring. Thin cast band of D section with a separate flat rhomboid bezel with knops at its ends and four spurs projecting from its upper and lower edges. This bears a relief motif of a four lobed knot in a rhomboid frame. Bent, twisted and glued together by the finder. Possibly a 'fairing' or item of cheap trinket jewellery. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1800-1900.
