A cast lead weight, probably Medieval 12th to 17th century AD. The weight is flat sub-circular with a raised circular moulding in the middle surrounding a perforation running through the centre. The weight is undecorated. The weight has a dull cream/light brown coloured surface. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, p66) points out that: "The function of leads weights would have varied, from spindle-whorls to fishing weights to trade weights." She adds that spindle whorls should ideally be circular and must have a central perforation (ibid.). It is possible, therefore, that thi…

A group of four lead alloy weights, probably net or line weights, of unknown date. They are roughly spherical and of varying size. They have all been constructed in the same way and each has a visible seam and a central sub-circular perforation of varying diameter. They are cream and light grey in colour. They vary slightly in size, but all are all approximately 8 mm long, 11 mm wide and weigh 5 g. This type of weight would have been positioned around the rim of a net, probably used for fishing or netting birds, to hold it taut. The dating of such weights is difficult as their d…

An incomplete lead weight of medieval to post-medieval date. The weight is ovate with a D-shaped section and worn decoration consisting of a raised cross on the front face. A circular perforation is present at one end of the weight suggesting it was used as a suspension weight or similar. The metal is a mid greyish-brown colour and is worn. The weight is 52.1mm long, 21.2mm wide, 13.1mm thick and weighs 67g. Numerous functions for such objects have been suggested including as fishing net weights or sinkers and while such objects are difficult to date with any degree of certaint…

A cast copper-alloy trade weight of Charles I or II, c.1625-1685 AD. It is circular in form with recessed front face and flat back face. At the centre of the front face is a circular indentation, with stamped marks of value present at top (12 o'clock) comprising a crowned letter C for Charles I or II and sword, and at bottom (6 o'clock) comprising a ewer. The weight measures 26.12mm in diameter, 4.47mm in thickness, and weighs 14.01g, just under half an ounce in the averdepois system. See Biggs, 1992: p. 50.

Lead weight. Cast heater shield shaped weight with the cast relief motif of three leopards left on a raised central panel. The panel is surrounded by a lower pelleted border with a low external ridge. Patinated overall, and scratched on front in antiquity - i.e. below the patina. As the finder kindly observes, the mass indicates this is likely to represent one half an averdepois pound. A moulded rectangular hole at the top of the raised panel was probably made using a nail as a former, and may have been intended to permit the use of this object as a steelyard poise. The 'three lions' …
