A complete Post Medieval copper alloy double looped buckle frame with traces of black lacquer (c. 1550-1650 AD). The frame consists of two D-shaped loops on either side of a central straight strap bar, which has a knop at both ends. Both loops have a rounded protrusion on the outer edge of the frame, which appears on one side to have moulded decoration in the form of four raised pellets; it is likely that the other loop once had similar decoration, however this is not visible due to corrosion. The remains of iron corrosion visible on the strap bar indicate that this buckle once had…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy probably Medieval buckle plate, c. AD 1300-1500. The remains of the buckle plate consists of a sub-rectangular segment of one of the probably original two plates; it is possible that the further spacer was used, but as this type is simple, it is possible that the plate comprised of two plates alone. A small fragment from one of the corners of the rectangular piece is missing from old breaks. Two circular holes have been positioned horizontally across the plate, within a few millimeters of the outer edges and positioned roughly in the centre of the …

An almost complete Medieval (c. 1350-1450 AD) copper alloy asymmetrical buckle. The buckle consists of an oval frame which has a notched pin rest opposite the pin, which is made of copper alloy and remains attached; however it appears to be incomplete as the pin no longer reaches the pin rest. The buckle has a rectangular strap loop to the reverse of the frame. The cross-section of the buckle frame is triangular, while the cross-section of the strap loop is square. The reverse of the buckle is flat. Similar buckles have been recorded by Whitehead (2003) No. 538. The date of this bu…

A Late Roman buckle frame in the dolphin style dating 300 to 450 AD. It consists of a pair of confronted zoomorphic creatures. Between the creatures heads is a hooded figure that appears to be representing the head of a dwarf (Genii) reminiscent of Telesphorus the hooded health God, which is often a Celtic or Gallic derivation. There are 2 rivets just below the ears presumably fixing the head in place. The head has deep set eyes and a broken nose. The creatures heads are integral, moulded in low relief, with open snouts with engraved eyes and crests in the form of protrusions on each …

Copper alloy buckle fragment, as kindly identified by Rob Webley, who comments as follows: 'I'm fairly sure this is a (high) medieval buckle. They are characterised by a long pin groove (often a point of break) and a combination of engraved linear decoration and small punched annulets, cf. KENT-245C95 for an example'. Cast object with a tapered hook at one end, flat at the other. One long edge, that lying on the outer edge, is of angled or V-section form. One flat side is divided into compartments by five or more vertically incised lines with further diagonal and horizontal strokes…
