Medieval copper alloy annular brooch of 13th or 14th century date
The brooch is near-complete, missing the pin-shaft and the settings (with a weight of 2.7g). The annular frame is comparatively small (with a diameter of 18.7mm) and is of triangular section (3.3mm wide and 3.3mm high). The bevelled face of the frame has six sub-circular recesses, which are likely to have held a setting or decorative coloured paste. Each of the settings is divided by an incised groove. The groove is flanked by diagonal grooves on the outside edge of the frame, which form a series of notches on the to…

The brooch is fragmentary, missing middle and lower parts of the bow but with the pin complete (with a length of 41.2mm, a depth of 16.8mm and a weight of 6.7g). The pin (with a length of 33.1mm and a diameter of 1.4mm) is hinged within tubular wings. The wings (with a width of 27.7mm and a diameter of 4.2mm - 5.0mm) have raised terminals, enhanced with a double-rib. The rear of the wings has slight flanges at the top and bottom. Roman copper alloy bow brooch, probably of Polden Hill type and of 1st century AD date
The brooch is fragmentary, represented by the comparatively large head and top of the bow only (with a surviving length of 37.8mm, a surviving depth of 16.9mm and a weight of 14.0g). The wings are largely lost (with a surviving width of 19.5mm) but are likely to have end lugs to secure the axis bar, in a 'Polden Hill' type arrangement). The head had curved mouldings on the side, now corroded (giving the head a width of 14.3mm). There is a stub at the apex of the head, possibly suggesting a claw w…
