Record ID: HAMP-536E23
Object type: HAMMERSTONE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible flint hammerstone, consisting of a rounded piece of brown-grey flint with some thick off-white patina and iron staining. There are areas of wear/ use (battering) on much of the surface with a few 'unused' areas, perhaps where the object was held in use or where parts of the edge have flaked away. This object is probably Prehistoric in date (Mesolithic to Bronze Age, c. 10,000 - 800 BC) but such stones have also been found in later contexts (e.g. Roman) and it is difficult to be certain of the date. Measures 81.18x77.56x67.35mm, weighs 475g.
