Gold finger ring with banded agate intaglio set into the oval bezel with moulded scrolled motifs on the sides of the bezel. The hoop was probably cast as a standard pattern, and then the intaglio separately commissioned and fitted to the bezel.
The banded agate is dark brown with a white band which divides the two devices that are engraved into the stone. The device on the left is a bearded bust with a rounded hat edged with crested ermine, facing right, and the device to the right of the band is a goat passant, moving right. The bearded bust may represent a Saracen which denotes that a member of the family fought in the Crusades. The hat represents the 'Cap of Maintenance' which is a ceremonial cap or crimson velvet lined with ermine, which is worn or carried by certain persons as a sign of nobility or special honour. It is often depicted in British heraldry, when it sits atop the usual helm and is blazoned A chapeau gules turned up ermine, and frequently has the family's usual crest on top of it. The impressions made from the intaglio would have the two devices facing right as they are on the family crest. The bearded bust with the 'cap of maintenance' represents the Prideaux family of Cornwall and Devon, and the goat passant represents the Brune family of Cornwall.
The intaglio symbolises the union of the two families, but interestingly, the natural band in the agate divides the two devices. The two families were not united through marriage but amalgamated when Charles Brune of Rowner, Hampshire, died in 1769 and his only remaining heirs were his nephew Charles Morton Pleydell and his grand-nephew, the Reverend Charles Prideaux (1760-1833). Both men adopted the name of Brune, and when Charles Morton Pleydell Brune died in 1785, Charles Prideaux inherited more of the Brune estates in Hampshire and Dorset, and by Royal License assumed the name of Brune in 1799. The ring was probably worn by his son, Charles, as the heraldic heir, and as it is the two crests of the family and not the arms, which could only be worn by the head of the family (Peter Prideaux-Brune pers comm).
The style of the hoop and bezel suggests that the ring was made in the first half of the 19th century (Judy Rudoe pers comm and valuation from Bonhams, Truro).
