Object type: BORER
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A borer or piercer fabricated on a thick, secondary flake of honey-coloured flint. The flake is sub-triangular in plan with no ripples of percussion or bulb of percussion evident on either face. There is a large area of off-white cortex remaining on one face covering approximately 80% of its surface. The flake has one, thick, convex edge, with the opposing one being worked to produce a sharp, concave edge using long, sub-parallel, low-angle retouch along its length. The tip of the borer has been further worked to produce a sharp point for boring or piercing using short, scaled, semi-a…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Kirklees

A group of 33 pieces of flint debitage, the waste material from flint working. The debitage pieces probably range from early Mesolithic to early Bronze Age in date, about 9000 BC - 2200 BC. They are all either flakes or chunks, of which 1 is chert. 2 flakes are secondary and the rest are tertiary. The colour of the flint debitage ranges from brown/grey to white. The lighter flints have varying degrees of patination. 4 flakes show evidence of being burnt through crazed cracking to their surfaces. These are shown in image 1 column B row 3, column C row 3, and in image 2 c…

A flint flake of unknown date; debitage or waste material from flint working. The flint is a primary flake with the dorsal face being covered in cortex. The exposed flint on the ventral face is brown in colour with a small patch of white; probably an inclusion. The flint shows evidence of stress, probably from pressure or crushing creating crazed cracking to the ventral face and jagged fracturing. It is sub-oval in plan and crescent-shaped in section. There appears to be no evidence of retouch. It is 23.9mm long x 28.5mm wide x 7.6mm thick. Weight 4.4g.

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete Mesolithic flint blade, dating 10,000 - 4,300BC. The striking platform is no longer present but the bulb of percussion is visible on the ventral side, with undulations radiating away. There are three ridges on the dorsal side which indicate at least three blades being removed, as one edge is slightly rounder than the rest and probably did not have a blade removed. There is evidence of retouch on the right edge of the ventral side. The object is made from a mid-dark grey flint. There is concretion along the rounded edge and the proximal end appears to have suffered later …

Grey-brown flint with cortex core. Flint pebble with flakes removed by working from one end, which has produced a tapered or keeled form overall. Cloudy patina on some struck surfaces, and its lack on others, suggests the reuse of the core. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC, with subsequent Neolithic reuse, 3500-2350 BC. Toffee coloured flint, weathered to cloudy grey, Core fragment. Cylindrical core with a single striking platform and long parallel flake removal scars indicating soft hammer working. A distinct episode of abrupt hard hammer working subsequently removed the striking platform, side and back of the core, and revealed the internal colour of the flint. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC, with Bronze Age reworking, 2350-800 BC. Length: 38.2mm, Width: 18.3mm, Thickness: 12.3mm, Weight: 12.69gms.

Dark brown flint with cortex core. Cylindrical core fragment with unidirectional working which has removed three broad parallel flakes. The reverse bears abrupt hard hammer flake removal scars probably unassociated with the original use, and the striking platform and one long edge were subsequently battered or ground. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC, possibly reused in the Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. The lack of patination suggests this object was until recently in a sealed context.
