Object type: BURIN
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Mesolithic flint burin, made from a secondary flake. The piece is subcrescentic, has several ridges on its dorsal surface and diffuse rippling on the ventral. The burin's point has probably been created by blunting of the area adjacent to the bulb. In addition, there is an area of invasive retouch at the distal end. Other serrated and notched edges appear to be the result of natural damage. The flint is lightly patinated and retains a small portion of the cortex. Length: 34.6mm; width: 13.5mm; thickness: 5.3mm. Weight: 2.11g.

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint blade of probable Mesolithic date. The blade has a longitudinal curvature, and sides that are generally straight and parallel; however, a notch has been cut at one point, which suggests that this may be an unfinished microlith. On the ventral surface, adjacent to the notch, there is an area of abrupt retouch, which cuts through the white surface patination. A central ridge creates a triangular section. There is invasive retouch to the other side. The blade has a straight, well patinated break at its distal end. Length: 26.5mm; width: 7.8mm; thickness: 2.6mm. Weight: 0.59g.

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Part of a copper-alloy Dolphin variant brooch, probably dating from the mid to late 1st century AD. This brooch is unusual in that it has a spring mechanism, but the form of the head has more in common with that of a hinged brooch. Only one of the subcylindrial wings survives intact, with a remnant of the second. This intact cylinder contains an iron axis bar, which is visible at the distal end and at the centre. The inner portion of this wing has been cut away to accommodate the four in situ coils of the copper-alloy spring. Above, this spring extends into part of an external chor…

Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Medieval copper-alloy hooked strap fitting. The attachment end of the fitting consists of a rectangular plate with convex upper surface and a flat underside, from which projects a pair of integrally cast, circular-sectioned rivets with flattened distal ends. A transverse ridge marks the transition between the base of the plate and the forward hook, the latter of which is of flattened-oval section, tapering towards its distal end, where there is a much wider, rectangular, flat-sectioned terminal. Traces of gilding survive on the upper surface of the heavily corroded object. …

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy pin from an Early-Medieval single-loop buckle. The pin is of 'shield-on-tongue' type; however, the integrally cast, flat-sectioned plate actually resembles a violin. The back of this plate is semicircular; a narrower, concave-sided projection extends towards the shaft, the inner end having a vertical groove in each of its two outer side faces. The shaft is generally of semicircular section, but there is a flattened area on top. The sides of the shaft converge towards the downward-curving tip, the flat underside of which slopes upwards and inwards. A casting seam…

Object type: SPEARHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of a Middle to Late Bronze Age socketed spearhead. The piece represents the tip of the spearhead, the remainder having been lost in antiquity. A conical void extends almost to the tip, creating a pronounced mid-rib on both sides. Either side of this mid-rib, the thickness tapers towards the straight edges. Patches of brownish-green patination survive, but most of the surface is heavily corroded. Length: 50.4mm; width: 19.5mm; thickness: 9.3mm. Weight: 12.19g.
