Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Solid cast tin button, circular in plan and plano-convex in profile, with a square attachment loop. The face of the button is quite corroded so that it is difficult to make out the decoration, but there is a slight central knop and three concentric circles between the centre and the edge of the button. There also appear to be some lines radiating from the centre across the circles to the edge. The loop is stepped at each outer edge which could be the result of damage, but both sections are neat and at right angles, appearing to have been deliberate, perhaps helping to grip on to this …

Object type: PURSE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Incomplete cast copper alloy purse bar, missing the central square-shaped block, with its swivelling loop and neck, and the other side arm, with its suspension loop. The central block would have attached to the broken end of the side arm, which is bent sideways, but would originally have been straight. There is a moulded, stylised, zoomorphic head at this broken end, gripping the side arm, which is circular in cross-section, in its mouth. The side arm is stepped from the edge of the mouth and widens in diameter towards its terminal. There are the remains of niello lattice work or cros…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast lead weight, trapezoidal in plan and triangular in profile with a flat rhomboidal base, which is slightly angled so that the weight is only just free-standing. Towards the upper apex of the weight is a central circular aperture that is 6 mm in diameter which would have been used to suspend the weight. The weight weighs 71.15 grams which equates to 2.5 ounces averdepois / avoirdupois. Egan (2005) illustrates similar weights on page 164, Fig.161, Nos.846 & 850, which are dated from c.1530-1570 and c.1630-1650.
