A post-Medieval copper-alloy strap mount. The head of the flat-sectioned mount consists of a roughly drop-shaped portion which has a rounded lobe at the centre of its base and is surmounted by a trilobate extension. A relief-moulded pattern of ridges and beaded lines decorates the upper surface, extending into a pair of swirls which make up the right- and left-hand sides of the apex. Traces of gilding remain on the upper surface. Two circular-sectioned rivets protrude from the reverse, one set above the other. The uppermost rivet projects straight backwards; the lower one has been …

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Central Bedfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A badly distorted copper-alloy artefact, Medieval in date and probably representing either an open-frame brooch or an incomplete frame from a single-loop buckle. The piece takes the form of a strip with a series of moulded subcuboidal turrets along its upper surface. These turrets alternate between two different heights, each of the taller ones having an incuse pellet at the centre of its upper surface. The vertical sides of the piece are flat, as is the underside. A groove extends longitudinally on the outer surface, located a short distance below the bases of the aforementioned t…

A post-Medieval copper-alloy buckle. The symmetrical frame is subrectangular, having rounded distal ends and inward-bowing horizontal sides. The axis bar is now missing but would have been located centrally, held in place by two opposing holes in the frame. Each horizontal side takes the form of a bow-shaped moulding. The right- and left-hand sides have downward-sloping, stepped surfaces, their inner edges decorated by a series of transverse nicks. On its underside the buckle is bevelled. The frame slopes downwards either side of the centre. The surfaces of the buckle are heavily t…

A post-Medieval copper-alloy buckle. The symmetrical frame is subrectangular, having rounded distal ends and inward-bowing horizontal sides. Parts of the iron axis bar remain, contained within two opposing holes at the centre of the frame, adjacent to each of which there is a bow-shaped moulding. The upper surfaces of the frame slope downwards and outwards, the outer edges terminating in a step. The maximum width of the frame is at the right- and left-hand ends, one of which also has a transverse groove pin rest. A white-metal coating has been applied across all surfaces of the buc…

A Medieval copper-alloy strap loop. The object comprises a subrectangular frame with three straight sides and one outward-bowing side in the form of a crowned human bust, facing forwards. A transverse strap bar, located a short distance from the straight vertical end, extends across the frame, linking the two horizontal sides. These straight elements are of rectangular section. The forward-facing bust, which is significantly wider than the rest of the frame, is of heavily stylised appearance, with a narrow, straight-sided, tapering face and a prominent nasal ridge. The incised eyes…

A copper-alloy double-loop buckle, dating from the post-Medieval period. The symmetrical frame has two roughly trapezoidal sides, the central axis bar forming the inner limb of each side. The frame flares towards its distal ends, each of which has a pair of projecting corner knops flanking a central, outward-pointing pin rest with transverse groove.
