Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An unpatinated object struck from a mottled grey flint, probably a core rejuvination flake. It has a prominent striking platform and slight bulb of percussion with long flake or blade scars on one face. A second group of parallel flake scars are positioned on one face of the object at right angles to, and transecting(?), the long flake scars. This sugests the object is a re-used or rejuvinated core rather than a simple waste flake. It measures 61.23mm in length (snapped), 40.48mm in width, 23.77mm in thickness and 48.04g in weight. A copper-alloy double-sided coin weight of Post-Medieval date 1580 or 1589 probably for weighing a Hungarian Angel. It is rectangular in form and section with uneven edges. The obverse depicts a standing figure within a beaded circular border, holding a sceptre over the shoulder. The standing figure is probably that of St. Ladislaus. The reverse carries a maker's mark comprising a hand and although indistinct probably letters HF within a beaded or border. This would indicate that manufacture was in Antwerp by the maker Hans Foncq. The weight is therefore of early Post-Medieval date, d…

Post Medieval, copper alloy, cone form, possibly a mount, decorated with seven orders of concentric circles. The object's walls are 2mm thick. In spite of appearances it probably isn't ordnance related as it has deformed rather than fragmented. Central perforation was originally c18mm in diameter. Probably dates to between c1750 and c1900 AD. No parallels were found on the database but the following record has some features in common - KENT-69F265. On the other hand it may be an element from a late Medieval to early Post Medieval copper alloy, possibly (latten) Bunsen type, candlestic…

Medieval copper-alloy lozengiform horse-harness pendant. There is no loop at the top; one corner is broken off, and it is likely that it was originally hinged at the side, with the loop now missing. The design is identical on both faces; the field (background) has extensive traces of gilding, and the charge appears to be a rampant unicorn in white enamel shown in profile facing left. All four feet are towards the missing loop, and by comparison with other unicorn-decorated pendants on the database (e.g. BUC-04A353, ESS-6F89E7 (also white), NMS-566003, DUR-7F1B21) it looks as if the un…

Medieval copper-alloy horse-harness pendant. It is trefoil in shape with two foils above and one below; an incomplete loop projects from between the two upper foils and is set at right angles to the rest of the pendant. The pendant has been decorated on one face with three raised triple-pointed crowns, one within each foil. The central point of each crown is a lis and the lateral points are half-lis. The pendant retains remnants of a finish, possibly silvering, over the lower part of the front (not the crowns) and the reverse. The length is 41mm, width 30mm, and the weight 9.61g. T…

Post Medieval white metal alloy mount in the form of a snarling beast's head, probably a lion, possibly a tiger or dragon. The object has been cast, some fine detail has then been cut in, & it has then had some type of silver coloured finish applied. Stylistically it appears influenced by Eastern art, probably Japanese, but may have been produced in Asia or Asia Minor, possibly as a vessel mount. No valid comparison found so far. In the circumstances it is difficult to give an accurate date but it is probably dates to between c1700 and c1900 AD. The length is 29mm, width 25mm, and …
