Copper alloy mount. Cast concavo-convex stud with the probably broken stub of an integrally cast rivet; a plate, now with broken sides, cast along with the stud projects from it. An Anglo-Scandinavian cast copper alloy mount dating to the 11th century. The mount is in the form of an elongated oval and has a rivet hole at each end, both filled with iron. The reverse side of the mount is concave and the upper face is rounded. On the upper face is an openwork interlace design inspired by the late Viking Urnes style, but very devolved. The decorative elements are not clear although a projection on each long side appears to be the head of a sinuous animal, seen from above. A pair of spiral hips with bifurcating limbs may also be made out. The form of this mount,…

Above the head the mount widens into an elongated oval shape, the reverse being rebated along much of its length. There are three drilled rivet holes, evenly spaced down the length of the attachment plate, all containing rivets in-situ. The upper and lower rivets are of iron and the central one is copper-alloy. There are the remains of sheet copper-alloy attached to the lower two rivets. The general…
