Object type: PENDANT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy pendant. Cast cylinder with grooved or ridged sides and with a light drawn wire loop for suspension at the top. The cylinder is hollow, with its base partially closed leaving an open aperture of diameter 8.5mm. A spot of gilding is retained close to the loop. This might have served as a lace end, or may have held a decorative plume or tassel, or possibly the bristles of a small cosmetic brush. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1700. Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead weight. Cast cylindrical weight with rounded edges to its base and a pointed conical top. A mould line appears across the top and down the sides. Entirely unpatinated. The mass leaves it uncertain which system of measurement this object respects, though the fresh condition must argue a recent date. The use of lead at this time would tend to exclude a regulated commercial use. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1750-1900. Diameter: 16.0mm, Height: 13.6mm, Weight: 18.81gms.

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead seal matrix fragment. Cut fragment of a personal seal matrix bearing part of a central motif of a rayed star or foliate spray, and a partial legend, now reading: [--]RIC[--]. Save for its rounded edge, suggesting an originally oval form, the other sides are formed by straight cuts. A lead seal matrix might be used by a person at the lower end of the social scale, though still one involved in transactions requiring authentication. The deliberate destruction of a seal in this way suggests the formal cancellation of the matrix to prevent its fraudulent reuse. Suggested date: Medieva…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy mount. Cast concavo-convex stud with the probably broken stub of an integrally cast rivet; a plate, now with broken sides, cast along with the stud projects from it. The plate bears linear relief decoration forming cells filled with extensive traces of gilding, and appears to depict a fan-shaped tail and the stubs of the wings of a bird; other readings are equally possible. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1500-1600. Length: 32.9mm, Width (plate): 13.4mm, Diameter (stud): 12.8mm, Thickness: 2.1mm, Weight: 4.77gms.

Copper alloy unidentified object. Tubular object with a butted seam and decorated or textured by relief comprising three rows of closely spaced circles of diameter 2.5mm against a finely vertically lined ground. The rows are separated by plain strips, in relief to the same degree as the circles. The circles are variously worn, and may have been intended to afford grip rather than as decoration. The object may have been attached to another at one end, and its sides are split apart at the other. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1600-1900. Length: 73.5mm, Diameter: 5.7mm, Thickness (t…

Lead alloy possible vessel fragment. Sub-circular fragment cut from a cast vessel or plate, apparently in a deliberate attempt to retain part of its figurative decoration with a lug above it. The fragment depicts a coiffed female bust facing left within a wreath whose leaves are crudely represented by trifid forms on a strand enclosing the bust. A lined sub-triangular figure above the bust may represent either a hat or further hairstyle detail, and figures or letters - if the latter, possibly A R - flank the neck of the bust. The object is of graduated thickness, thickest below the bu…

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead possible weight. Cast oval slightly concavo-convex object. The concave face bears an incised T or a cross; the finder kindly notes the similarity of this figure to the runic letter Tiw. Heavily patinated overall. The mass could suggest this to represent three Scandinavian units of 4.07gms or one half ora/ore. Though the appearance of this module in uneven multiples is uncommon, another object of probable early medieval date found nearby shares this characteristic. Suggested date: possibly Early Medieval, 850-950. Length: 30.1mm, Width: 25.2mm, Thickness: 2mm, Weight: 12.43gms.

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Lead possible gaming piece, as kindly suggested by the finder. Cast plano-convex object with eight integrally cast knops set equidistantly around a central knop on its convex side. The form is similar to that of Viking Age weights thought to have been used for checking silver bullion transactions. However, the mass of this object does not coincide closely with multiples of either the Scandinavian module of 4.07gms or the Dublin module of 4.43gms, and the closest it comes would be to five such units, which as an uneven value would be uncommon - though another object also representing a…

Copper alloy brooch. Cast head and bow of a trumpet brooch with mid bow petalled ornament which does not run all around the bow, probably of three petals, and with three ribbed mouldings below it, Mackreth type TR 1.b1. A plain trumpet head has an integrally cast loop behind it. The lower bow may have had a pronounced central aris, though it is now abraded. The pin gear, catch plate and foot are lost. Suggested date: Early Roman, 75-125. Length: 35.4mm, Width: 9.7mm, Thickness (crest of bow): 3.2mm, Weight: 5.84gms.

Copper alloy wheel. Cast wheel with four thin spokes expanding at their inner ends to form a rhomboid hub. On one side there are 29 tiny circular stamps of diameter 1.2mm in a closely spaced series around the rim, with a similar off-centre stamp on the hub; on the other side thirty identical stamps appear on the rim with another placed on the hub, again off-centre. In both cases, the arrangement of stamps becomes denser towards one end of the series, and on both sides the 'central' stamp may be closer to this more crowded group. The finder kindly identifies the object as a possible vo…

Gold ingot fragment. Cast straight-sided bar. One side is slightly convex, with an off-centre ridge which ends on the curved edge of a chamfered end. The finder kindly supplies a laboratory surface analysis, which finds 93% gold, 2% copper, 1% silicon and 4% silver. This relative purity might support an early date. However, an original suggestion by the finder that this may be from an artefact such as a simple pendant cross fails to find support from any closely related parallels. Barry Ager kindly comments that the form of the object is undiagnostic, and that it is therefore unsuitab…

Copper alloy mount. Long cast mount of zoomorphic form, comprising a dragonesque head with eyes deftly represented by short cuts, and a crest or ears held back, projecting from a vertical neck. The neck rises at right angles from a narrow body of plano-convex section with clawed legs alongside it and folded wings, the latter in two pairs like an insect's. The narrow body is expanded as a knotted tail at its other end. Two rivets, of length 6mm and shank diameter 1.6mm, pass at an angle, backwards relative to the creature, through its body at positions between the front claws and at th…
