An irregularly shaped piece of greensand, possibly originally a fragment of a quern (which suggests an Iron Age or Roman date) or perhaps Roman building material - in Winchester Greensand was used in the Roman period to strengthen the corners of building foundations (Helen Rees, Curator, Winchester Museums, pers. comm. September 2014). The fragment measures 220x170x95mm with several linear grooves on one face c.7mm in depth, suggestive of possible blade-sharpening.
