Early Medieval strap end, cast copper alloy with niello inlay. Decoration chisel cut rather than cast and the incised lines inlaid with niello, which is missing from some areas. Down the centre of the strap end is what appears to be a simplified version of a Borre ring chain. This is flanked by two elongaged oval panels below which are what look like scroll-ended tendril. Further tendrils for the eye-brows. The animal head terminal is boldly executed with raised eyes set within recess areas, each eye containing a dot. Roman silver finger ring of keeled type. This has an oval hoop that is rectangular in section and expands to triangular shoulders. The shoulders are decorated with four sets of incised lines that expand from the loop outwards towards the bezel, flanking these are four stamped pellets on either side which are surmounted by a scrollwork spiral in each upper corner. The bezel is a flat oval panel that would have held a setting for a stone or intaglio, but only a ring of soldering remains. Post depositional damage has resulted in this finger ring becoming distorted and squished. Simila…

A silver gilt collet from an annular brooch. The collet is made from thin sheet silver that has been formed into a hollow box that is sub-rectangular in profile and rectangular in plan. A circular aperture at its apex would have held a stone. There are traces of the frame at the base of the collet and ruminants of forked branches which were soldered onto either side. This is an additional fragment of a incomplete annular brooch that has been precisely recorded at GLO-F97DA4 2012T386

Early Medieval, cast copper alloy strap end of Thomas' Class B Type 1, characterised by a zoomorhic terminal and transverse grooving. The animal's head is highly stylised and represented by two notches on each side of the head which define the eyes. The transverse grooving is irregular and extends for around 60% of the length of the strap end, above which is the split end. This is damaged but two, 2.4mm holes can be seen, separated by two notches. The incised decoration contains traces of a crystaline substance which is likely to be enamel. Condition poor and corroded, the strap end i…

Early Medieval, cast copper alloy, strap end of Thomas' Class A 1 with Trewhiddle style decoration, of which one corner survives. The animal head terminal is strongly defined with incised dot eyes set on large, lateral projections, the nose is plain. Behind the head two ears are represented by angular, 'U' shaped incisions flanking an incised, longitudinal, line. It is possible that the Trewhiddle decoration was inlaid with enamel but this is now obscrured by varnish (see FAKL-B26DC2). The upper leaf of the bifurcation is missing, taking with it most of the decorative panel. At the to…
