An incomplete Early Medieval cast copper-alloy stirrup strap mount, dating from the 11th century AD. Williams Class A, Type 12. The stirrup strap mount is openwork in style and is lozenge-shaped in plan; it would have had a circular suspension loop at the top, which is now missing. The openwork body had four lozenge-shaped apertures and is decorated with at least five raised bosses, with two near the top, one positioned in the middle and two at the bottom. It is possible that a further two may have been positioned at the outer edges of the centre, however this detail is obscured due t…

Cast copper alloy stirrup mount dating from the early medieval period, that is the 11th century. It survives fragmentary, but can be classed as an early medieval Anglo-Scandinavian stirrup mount of Williams Class A. It is missing the apex of the mount due to old breaks and has extremely worn surfaces. The mount is triangular in form, D-shaped in section with flat back face and slightly convex front face. At the top it terminates in old breaks at what appears to be an incomplete central circular rivet hole. A pair of circular apertures are present at the bottom corners of the mount, ea…

Cast copper alloy object, probably the remains of a Middle Saxon strap end comparable to Thomas' Class C. The object is of simple form: one end is expanded, probably to accomodate a missing bifurcation. The rest of the object consists of a plain, oval sectioned bar, 5.8 x 3.8mm. Lightly incised across the wider end of the object are transverse lines: one on one face, two on the other. the shoulders of the expended area are marked by two, or three notches. The object is in good condition. Length 42.1mm, Width 12.6mm, Thickness 2.3mm. Parallels for this possible 'styliform' strap end…

Remains of a silvered, cast copper alloy, Middle Saxon, strap end probably of Thomas' Class A1, with Trewhiddle style decoration, now obscured by wear/corrosion. The upper section of the strap end with the bifurcation is truncated and, owing to to the objects fragile state, it has been backed with resin making the determination of its mass difficult. On the terminal are two eyes separated by a narrow bar, a transverse bar and a broad groove separates them from the nose which is marked by a longitudinal notch. The face of the strap end appears to have been heavily silvered but the pres…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: East Riding of Yorkshire

Cast copper alloy, Middle Saxon strap end, corroded with most decorative detail obscured or lost. Round-sided, tapering with two narrowed 'waists' towards the animal-head terminal. This retails some of its zoomorphic features; the bulging eyes and the shaping of the head. Behind the head are the traces of two 'U' shaped ears. The upper end of the strap end is bifurcated but is incomplete, the rivet holes being missing. The absence of decorative detail makes it impossible to classify this object further than Thomas' Class A. Length 44.5mm, Width 13.9mm, Thickness 4.8/3.0mm, Mass 8.13g.

Fragment of a gilt, cast copper alloy, plate of probable Early Medieval date, It is roughly square or lozenge-shaped and bears raised decoration consisting of a circular central boss surrounded by four smaller bosses, all set within raised rings. Between each of the four bosses is a group of two pellets and a bar. A raised rim survives around part of the edge. Gilding is restricted to the plate's face, its rear is corroded but bears traces of tinning/silvering. The plate bears no obvious signs of attachment points or thickening of its edge indicative of it being a part of a larger o…

Lead alloy cross pendant. Possibly cut from sheet lead. The upper and lower arms of the cross are longer than the two side arms and flare towards their ends. The side arms converge slightly towards their ends. The design gives the object a vaguely anthropomorphic shape and it may be more properly classed as a crude crucifix. There is a suspension hole piercing the upper arm near its end. All of the edges of the cross are smoothed or rounded perhaps through use. Much of the surface is covered by a thick cream coloured patina however this is largely missing on one side of the cross at t…
