A fragment of a ceramic tile of Medieval date (AD 1066-1500). The fragment is most probably that of a roof tile and is sub-rectangular with a clear, original right-angled edge surviving, despite the river-rolled condition of the edges. The fabric varies between cream, grey and dark-grey in colour and has a porous, pimpled surface. It has been heavily abraded on all faces.

Object type: MORTARIUM
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A fragment of a ceramic vessel of Roman date (AD 200-410). The fragment is a rim sherd; upturned rim of a probable Roman mortarium fragment. The rim is prominently upturned, and forms a shallow groove between that and the beaded interior rim. The fabric is severely abraded on all faces and is a heavily sand-tempered reduced grey ware. Any original slip or surface decoration is now lost. Greyware mortaria of a similar size, with upturned rims, are known from the Crambeck industry in the region; the condition of the object prevents a definitive association, however.
