An incomplete Early-Medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) cast gilded copper-alloy radiate-headed or miniature bow brooch (c. 450-c. 550). The lower part and the pin are missing. The head is semi-circular and on the front is a chip carved design with a raised zig-zag forming slightly arched chevrons. A knop at the apex has two small circular recesses, and there is a small flat undecorated knop at the lower right-hand corner. It is assumed that there would have been a similar knop at the opposite corner. On the reverse of the headplate, a single pin lug is largely obscured by a corroded iron…

A copper-alloy Colchester-derivative brooch, dating from the mid to late 1st century AD. The brooch is complete but slightly distorted. The copper-alloy spring, comprising eight coils, is held in place by an axis bar and external chord, both of which are contained within perforated lugs at the centre of the head's underside. These lugs extend into the bow, forming a grooved central ridge, which creates a trapezoidal section. The bow decreases in width towards the bottom, where the brooch terminates in a squared-off foot and openwork catchplate. Length: 31.1mm; width: 18.6mm. Wei…

An incomplete copper-alloy Late Iron Age - early Roman Langon Down brooch dated AD 25-60. The pin would have been sprung and held within a cylinder spring case, and weighs 5.12g. This cylinder is formed from the expansion of the top and bottom edge of the wings which curve around forming a now incomplete encasement. This encasement is likely to have had a small notch for the pin to exit the encasement from. The pin no longer survives. The curved wings have a width of 19.3mm and height of 6.3mm. The ends of the wings are open and seem not to have had end-caps. No decoration is visibl…

Fragment of an early Roman copper-alloy brooch. The wings appear to have been semi-cylindrical in section. Both ends are incomplete; a small incomplete tab representing all that remains of the bow extends from the middle. The tab is rather flat and rectangular in section, suggesting that it might be from something like a thistle brooch.
