County: Isle of Wight
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete but worn large flat circular chunky lead alloy probable seal. The reverse of the seal is plain and the front carries an indecipherable inscription around the perimeter which starts with an initial cross and a central design which consists of a cross design with a fleur de lys in each angle. The centre of this cross may have formed the attachment point for this seal to an item such as a document and this possible attachment point is also visible on the reverse. This seal has been dated broadly to the later Medieval period as c.1200-1500.
