Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Squashed and split copper alloy hand-drilled or punched thimble. Sides taper inwards from an originally circular (now ovalled) open base to a slightly flattened but smoothy curving enclosed crown. The top has a central tonsure with a spiral of shallow hand punched or drilled circular pits that continue over the top and down the sides to the base. There is a narrow unpunched circumferential band at the base. The form suggests the thimble is late Medieval and dates from circa 15th century AD. The thimble is 16.3 mm tall, 1.2mm thick and weighs 3.47g.
